Let me start by saying, I fucking love this album art. This album picks up where its predecessor left off for the most part (which has earned it a reputation of being slightly worse for it), but the contrast that exists within the various elements of Aephanemer's sound feels stronger here (partially due to the occasional use of clean vocals, and partially because the harshes feel more that this time around). I was initially drawn to this by comparisons to Ensiferium (which was one of the first bands with harsh vocals I really got into), and while there are certainly some similarities, there are some obvious points of distinction. I'm not going to harp too much on them, as Aephanemer is a band who deserves discussion on their own merits, but it's worth noting that their particular brand of metal skews away from folk and more towards symphonic metal. #1 Week of 05/02/60 and week of 05/16/60
Let me tell you, it's pretty bizarre going back and looking at old #1 albums and seeing how different popular music was before the Beatles. The last thing I looked at was a Broadway musical soundtrack and this one's just some instrumental orchestral music. A person would be right to suggest that I have a fairly limited amount of exposure to musicals, but as the second entry in my reviewing every #1 billboard album (mono until charts combine, excluding albums like NOW!) here we find ourselves outside of my wheelhouse. This is the first album I'm listening to as part of a project where I go through and listen to all of the number 1 albums from 1960 to the present day (mono until charts are combined and excluding bullshit like Now compilations) to get a better feel for why I like and dislike certain things and maybe find some interesting stuff I wouldn't have endeavored to check out otherwise.
