I adore Kanye and generally will defend him to the death...I also loved 'Ye' and 'KSG' but this album is a hard one to defend. Firstly, while there are some great beats here, it's mixed terribly and the vocals sound awful at times. Not in a way that some tracks from 'Yeezus' manipulated his voice - just bad! By now, it feels as if Kanye sets a release date in mind and (vaguely, given the time delays) does what he can to reach it. It's hard to imagine the Kanye who spent over 100-hours on POWER ... read more
Great album! Managed to get a copy of it early on vinyl, as they were selling it at her shows. While it's very much rooted in the dream pop genre, each song is catchy and varied enough to prevent it from sounding too samey. Production is lush and the songwriting is top notch. Stay With Me in particular is a great track.
I've listened to the album a few times now. It's pretty good, quite consistent and reasonably fun. I like the title track, Creature Comforts, Signs of Life, Put Your Money on Me, and We Don't Deserve Love. However, it comes close to being slight and samey at times, particularly in contrast to the epic sprawl of Reflektor. If that album was AF's 'Tusk', this is their 'Mirage'. Crucially, it's missing an emotional knockout punch - the 'almost crying' moment that their penultimate tracks on ... read more
Good but not as good as RTJ 1/2. On its own terms, it's awesome, but suffers from being 'more of the same'. The 51 minute running time (vs 32 and 38 minutes before) doesn't help either and exposes how limited El-P's production style can be, as awesome as it is, Too many tracks sound similar and it lacks the jaw dropping deep cuts like 'Early' off the last album. Down, Thieves and Oh Mama I could definitely live without, even though Call Tickerton, Thursday, the last track, and all the ... read more
I've given this a good 10+ listens but just can't get into it. It took me a while to get to grips with Channel Orange but this is on a different plane - it's just boring. Such little variety on display and too many tracks blend into each other. Channel Orange, I think, will stand the test of time, but I suspect people will look back at this and be baffled by the rave reviews.
