the production on this album? excellent. the songwriting? good, but quite generic pop. the lyricism? honestly rather poor.
definitely a mixed bag, but overall the lyrics fully let this album down.
highlights: Getaway Car (probably just nostalgia), New Years Day (the only song on the album where i really appreciated the lyrics)
look... i know that objectively this isn't a perfect album...
BUT!! listening to this whilst walking in the sunshine feeling the wind on your back??? an absolutely magnificent experience.

i love many of the songs on this album. unfortunately, this is mostly because they're all almost identical. definitely a consistent listening experience the whole way through!
also, i feel as though the string / violin parts throughout (particularly noticeable in "You always get what you want") sound pretty synthetic, although i haven't been able to find out if this is true. i feel strongly that the musical style would fit real strings much better, just since they carry more ... read more
i appreciated the pop-subgenre mix in this album, with trap, R&B and even some soul influences in there. seemed as though some songs were very much filler tracks, or collabs for the sake of mutual benefit, rather than artistic vision though. as one would expect for a commercial pop album, there wasnt a great deal of unique or personal songwriting in there, but that's expected for the genre.

what a beautiful album. learning the story behind it, and background of the Will's life, i'm not surprised he was able to write such a heartfelt set of songs.
My one issue is that for some tunes, written lyrics were necessary for me to hear what he's singing. despite this little nit-pick i would highly recommend this album to anyone remotely interested in indie / alternative music
