The Voidz - Tyranny
85

Definitely has its weak tracks but when Julian + The Voidz get it right oh boy do they get it right. Human Sadness and Father Electricity stood out for me.

Have a Nice Life - The Unnatural World
85

Heavy soundscapes abound on this LP.

Bill Callahan - Dream River
72

'You used to take me up/I watched and learned how to fly' A very enjoyable folk album although the first half of it is eons better in comparison to the second.

Mutual Benefit - Love's Crushing Diamond
88

Listening to this album is like sitting in a garden in the middle of spring. Flowers and trees are freshly bloomed, birds are chirping softly. It's not a breathtaking landscape by any means but it's calm and beautiful in its own right.

Sky Ferreira - Night Time, My Time
57

A venerable synthpop debut. Sky is a refreshing face in pop music and the hooks are almost instantly memorable in some of her songs. There was a lot of talk over the jarring nude album cover but it honestly fits the album perfectly. What usually would 'turn some people on' or be deemed attractive is instead shown in an unattractive light. Much like the lyrics throughout the LP, Sky is going through some deep shit and there's more to her than a pretty face with some catchy songs. ... read more

CHVRCHES - The Bones of What You Believe
91

The Bones of What You Believe is an awesome piece of glitzy synth-pop dance music. The hooks are so superbly arranged on almost every track. This is an album I could get behind going to a rave for.

Death Grips - Government Plates
50

An uneven yet sonically crazy hip hop album from Death Grips.

51

Psychedelic bliss that is hard not to enjoy to some degree.

Savages - Silence Yourself
52

A hard-hitting debut from Savages shows promise.

Melt-Banana - Fetch
53

This album is like Elmo on crack

Autre Ne Veut - Anxiety
54

A soulful and auspicious album and definitely worth a listen or two.

Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience
55

I was pleasantly surprised with this album. Justin Timberlake could have made an album with simple singles and short 2 to 3 minute songs but instead he chose to make a more experimental album and stretch his comfort zone a bit. Some of the songs tend to elongate for far longer than they should but Justin does what he does best, makes funky grooves for people to dance and get it on to.

Neko Case - The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You
56

The first half of the album is amazing but it starts to die out fairly quickly after it.

58

Creepiness mixed with grace, pretty much exactly what you come to expect from a Nick Cave album.

John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts
59

Very blatant and heart on the sleeve lyrics mixed with some cool musical choices make for a solid album all around.

DARKSIDE - Psychic
61

A very interesting experience. Sometimes it can come across as just droll and uneventful but tracks like Paper Trails bring out the best in the Darkside duo.

Danny Brown - Old
60

A solid but not spectacular hip-hop album, although it may need a few more listens to see its full potential.

Laura Marling - Once I Was an Eagle
62

Sounds very much like a more acoustic guitar based Fiona Apple. A bit overstuffed but regardless it's a pretty great album, and the lyrics are fantastic at times.

The Knife - Shaking the Habitual
63

Probably the weirdest album of the year. It's hard to make it through the entire album without getting frustrated with how long it seems to carry on without doing anything particularly new or interesting but it does hit the mark on the bullseye on the first couple tracks and sporadically throughout the rest of the experience.
