Ariana Grande - My Everything

well, continuing along the ariana discography journey, we have now reached her sophomore studio album, my everything—what most consider to be her least cohesive project. and yes, i will admit that the order of the track list does not work in the album's favor, but that's not necessarily a fault. the best i've heard this album described is as a "playlist," and i couldn't agree more. an album does not have to stick to one solid sound for it to be considered, ... read more

Ariana Grande - Sweetener

well, following up dangerous woman was bound to be a challenge, and i'm not exactly sure if she proved herself with this album. overall it's a messy project with even messier production—that does not translate to a cohesive body of work. it is also never my intention to specifically target one individual for their faults, but every single song produced by pharrell fell flat for me. that goes for the two rap features as well. if this had solely been produced by max martin and ... read more

Ariana Grande - Dangerous Woman

undoubtedly her best body of work. this is ariana grande in her utmost element. it is a slinky and bombastic pop record which helped age her image, and solidified her as one of the music industry's main pop girls. those latex bunny ears will forever be a moment all on their own. album highlights include the title track, greedy, and the celestial closer, thinking bout you.

Lorde - Melodrama

speechless. absolutely speechless. it would be an understatement to call this album anything short of a masterpiece. the grammy's didn't get it on first listen, but i sure did. album highlights include homemade dynamite, hard feelings, and perfect places.

Katy Perry - Smile

despite a few notable misses, this is a pretty good modern pop record. there's nothing entirely new here, but there are a lot of exuberant pop moments that really shine through. specifically, cry about it later, tucked, and only love highlight katy's ability to curate quality *pop* music. it's her weakest record to date by far, but still worth a listen. here's hoping KP6 (143) is better than this.

Suki Waterhouse - I Can't Let Go

this is what fiona apple meant when she said "sullen girl." you can almost hear suki's frown as she effortlessly vocalizes throughout this project. the production is stunning and immaculate and perfectly depicts the melancholic themes explored in all of the tracks. the writing, especially in side b, definitely suffers and can come off as weak, but the production and suki's vocals strongly make up for it. it's a pity this release often gets overlooked, and even more of a ... read more

Camila Cabello - C,XOXO

well...this album had its share of highs and lows. and the lows can get pretty deep. however, it is worth noting that there are a few genuinely *good* pop songs included in this project. even a ballad or two which showcase camila's vulnerability. this is, by no means, a necessarily good pop record, but camila's commitment to curating a new persona of herself should be noted and commended. i think had she gone full hyperpop, there definitely would've been some more enjoyable ... read more

Beyoncé - COWBOY CARTER

what a journey this album was. beyoncé has done it again, creating an instant classic. the expressive story-telling with the mesmerizing harmonies make this, yet again, a new genre beyoncé has mastered. that being said, the whole country shtick did seem a bit aimless coming off of her previous record, renaissance. so much so that at certain points it didn't feel genuine, and felt more like she subscribed to a certain niche. a niche many of her fans craved from her, ... read more

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

a dreamlike world is built by the visual nature presented in the o'connell siblings newest work. a chromatic and electrifying sound with ravishing production and candid lyricism. a definite standout in eilish's discography, and a valid contender for best pop record of 2024 thus far.

Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine

a lucid look into the happenings of ariana's life in an almost four year absence from releasing music. perhaps the most honest body of work in her entire career. a cohesive assortment of songs which tell an imperfectly perfect story—beginning to end. album highlights include bye, true story, the boy is mine, and the almost flawless title track.

Charli xcx - BRAT
93

club classic, more like cult classic. brat isn't just an album, but a lifestyle in and of itself. an attitude, a mood—an instantaneous confidence boost to anyone with ears. charli mastered the sheer dichotomy between a raunchy party girl and melancholic robot who just wants love. a sweaty and grungy collection of tracks which depict the diary of a club girl who feels all the feels. the album cover says it best: generic font that is purposefully blurred and distorted. this is charli ... read more
