Not really getting the whole admiration for Hadreas sounding like a bunch of other artists, combining a plethora of genres (which seems like the thing to do these days) and producing a totally fine album that (at least for me) lingers very little as it fades out.
A quiet, metropolitan soundscape to traverse, reminding us that emptiness contains something.
Plenty of ideas. Not deep enough to penetrate though.
For music by a composer known for their film work, this sounds like just that. Hirano's 2008 ' klo:yuri' showed more promise.
An admirable sense of realisation of the world – and the need to push through the ‘Absurdity’ (a highlight) – it’s close to reaching that potential, as an album, but doesn’t push beyond those well-trodden paths from the indie-rock forebearers before him.
It may meander (which is not always a bad thing) but he still hits home with some observations as always.
Once again – if you allow it to – it will slow time, brining the clock almost to a halt.
Cate has certainly proven she has her own idiosyncratic sound that takes you straight into her mind (this strangely feels like we're actually in her head when listening), but I'm not entirely convinced what's in there is very interesting, IMO.
The love has gone incredibly far this collection of songs that more resembles a best-of compilation than an album of the year. Considering Mitski generally sings about the same things (granted, in different ways) I don't quite understand the adoration for her progression as a songwriter... this is Puberty 3, just wearing a cowboy hat.
Closer track 'Two Slow Dancers' made me re-consider the earlier thoughts and there's no doubting this a well produced, lovely album to listen to, but AOTY? Good ... read more
Chaotic is certainly one way to put it but as an introduction into Egyptian experimental music I am intrigued...
