This is JoJo's best officially released album, and yes, I said album. And let's get this one thing straight; it being called an "EP" had more to do with industry politics than anything else.
JoJo had been a veteran in the industry by the time she released this album, but she achieved something that she never did before: this is her first project that intentionally creates a whole musical universe around it. Every song feels like a necessary part of the puzzle and as a ... read more
I hate to say but this sounds AI generated; and if it's not, it's actually even more offensive that it does. It's a struggle to find the actual melody, and if I had to guess, it's somewhere inside the most boring and underwhelming chorus I've heard in a long time... which also seems completely detached from the rest of the parts of the song that are even more forgettable. I can't believe Max Martin is behind this, but then again I've said this way too many ... read more
While the general public craves for Promiscuous Nelly, the diehard Nelly stan absolutely knows her essence and most heartfelt interesting and genuine work can only be found somewhere else; among the likes of tracks from Whoa Nelly, Folklore, Spanish and Portuguese influenced music, and to some extent, some Loose tracks, certainly not the megasmashes though, but the deep cuts.
When a pretty mainstream artist like Miss Nelly Furtado disappears for five years and releases her comeback full-length ... read more
Unpopular opinion but the explicitness in the second verse takes away from the song musically and will probably ruin its chances to succeed commercially. I'm not a prude but I think nuance works way better in Pop music and can be more clever/interesting to explore, she should have kept the word play going in my opinion. Other than that, I can see Kesha has been bringing back her classic sound and mastering it, without feeling forced or desperate, and it keeps getting better. It's ... read more
I can hear HEART STATION era. Lyrically, I love how the song, despite being made for children's media, has a really important message of embracing yourself and what makes you unique that both kids and adults can resonate with. It's simple but sometimes that's how it has to be; and Hikki's goal of giving us life lessons through songs is something that has always been there and remains. It's uplifting. Also that doo-woop breakdown in the end? Seeing them trying new things ... read more
Loreen delivers another strong EDM album matched with her powerful signature voice, finding the perfect balance between radio-friendly and experimental sounds. My only two complaints would be that a few droplets were excluded ('Forever', 'Gravity', 'Warning Signs') to my understanding mostly due to label issues; that and that I would have loved for her to go harder on the North African influences like the first incarnation of the album (ATLAS) promised. Either way, ... read more
With Reverie, it's clear Lolo has found her sweet spot and what works for her, making songs that feel very reminiscent of her past work, especially High Highs to Low Lows. It still works as good as ever and this is a beautiful addition to her discography.
The most refreshing part of this project are the full French tracks, which almost makes me wish the entire album was in French. That and the ballads, slower heartfelt songs, which make up for a considerably amount of the album, creating ... read more
Okay, I can't sleep. Let's do this.
This album is fascinating, so much that it has taken me a couple of months to put my thoughts into a review, and my impression of it has been an authentic rollercoaster.
Hilary Duff comes back to being a Pop star ten years later. What could possibly go wrong? Well... a lot, actually. So 'Luck... or Something', above all and if anything, has taken real courage from Miss Duff.
Since context matters, and maybe some of you are actually ... read more
My score gives away that I'm enjoying the album a lot. BUT, it has taken me a bit to warm up to it and I'll try to explain why.
First of all, I've been a huge Kehlani fan for the longest, and I'm not sure how much Kehlani is showing of themselves in what was supposed to be their self-titled record, so this is kind of a big deal. It's not unapologetically queer nor unapologetically outspoken in a way they actually are in their life. They've had to tone it down, ... read more
She will never be who she thinks she is. This is so Taylor Swift/Lana del Rey adjacent (as usual), and adding pink guitars in her music video won't make her a rock chick. I don't get the hype, sorry.
I should have learned my lesson long ago and stopped being influenced by bangwagons. In this case, hate bandwagons.
I'm only listening to this EP now and it's a lot of fun. Sure, Gnarly was inescapable and just like everybody, I also had my reservations with it but once it clicks, it just sticks with you. It's very confusing how music critics and users on sites like this can be all over Hyperpop music and suddenly think of this song as a heinous crime. Like I said, hate ... read more
Her work with Cirkut is starting to be a mixed bag for me. The Dead Dance and this are hideous and make me wonder if the best moments on MAYHEM were a fluke. This one specifically sounds like she reheated Chromatica nachos (nobody asked for it) and is trying to pander to the gays even harder than she did when she sold Chromatica jockstraps.
After Sexistential and its Blow My Mind re-recording, it felt only right to revisit this Swedish-exclusive physical release.
Honestly, and quite simply put, this is a fire record?! It's a high-energy, upbeat and insanely catchy album. I've heard some music lovers online labeling it as weird, uncharacteristic and manufactured. I suppose this is an assumption people make due to it being the last album she released before funding her own label and crafting the sound we know her for ... read more
Mýa's most quintessential album. It goes without saying that it starts on a high with songs you may already know, but, if you give it a proper chance, you'll discover some true gems down the line.
There's a spring/summery vibe about this body of work, but not the typical sweaty long excruciating kind of day, but the gentle breeze and sun caressing your skin kind, if that makes sense. Such a smooth listen and while it doesn't feel truly conceptual, there's enough ... read more
"I've done this before, not like this".
Ten years have passed since Zayn's debut as a solo artist and time is being kind to this album. In the midst of the Biebers and the Sheerans and Mendes of the world, Zayn offered a solid body of work which was genuinely distinctive and unique, with personality and far from formulaic or music trends of the moment. No need for reinventions or desperate attempts at being number one, all he had to do was embrace his R&B influences and ... read more
Nothing much to act that hasn't already been said, this album is timeless and cohesive as hell. One of those rare cases when the best quality music is also rewarded with insane commercial success. Personally I'm a bigger fan of his previous album, but it's undeniable he stepped up vocally, basically exploring all his range up and down, and every song feels like part of the same world sonically, and the latter wasn't always the case with 8701. Every sample in here only helps ... read more
No matter what losers on the Internet, looking for validation by using a man pushing 70 as a punching bag, say, an album with Monsters of Pig Alley on it can't be anything but great.
This is a man who has remained true to himself and kept the creative flame alive through it all in spite of how much he hates himself and life, and because of that he has spoken, and keeps speaking, to so many people. These songs are pouring as much of his heart as any The Smiths record ever did and thanks to ... read more
The greatest Pop song of all time. Deserved a couple of GRAMMYs. It was a huge hit and still severely underrated; I wish JoJo GENUINELY gets her flowers for this someday.
R.I.P. Billy Steinberg.
