Lola's Pocket PC - Lola's Pocket PC

Super dreamy electropop album. Sounds like I’m drifting off to sleep in the stars.

For a debut project I’m super impressed with how unique this sounds. It takes the essence of dream pop and mixes it with these dainty but hazy synths, which is something I’ve never heard before. It’s also got great writing. The lyrics talk a lot about transhumanism and what life might be like living as a person who’s had their consciousness uploaded to a robot. Not only is that a ... read more

I feel pretty mixed about this one. There were a handful a great and replayable pop rap bangers on here but there are also some baffling and terrible songs as well. For example the intro track “To the World” has a laughably bad performance by R Kelly. His verse has some of the worst auto tuning I’ve ever heard and leaves the song unrecoverable by an alright Kanye and Teyana Taylor part. However after that the album really picks up with 5 solid back to back tracks. ... read more

susquatch - 1st Demo

Great ep! Definitely has a more straightforward emo sound compared to Susquatch’s later math pop releases, but it still feels remarkably well put together what is just considered a “demo”. It’s very impressive how much emotion the singer is able to pack into his vocals even though he’s essentially speaking nonsense the whole time. The instrumentation is also lovely, especially on “Sin” which has a heavenly bass line and breakdown. Definitely don’t ... read more

The Mars Volta - Tremulant

Super fun ep! Loved the all around energetic and driven instrumentation combined with the singer’s grandiose vocals. Especially enjoyed the lively drumming throughout and the lyrics on “Concertina” which tells a pretty gnarly story about the suicide of a person the vocalist knew.

I do have one major problem with this ep though, and that’s with the big dead zones in the first 2 minutes of “Cut That City” and the last 3 minutes of “Eunuch ... read more

死んだ僕の彼女 [my dead girlfriend] & Shojoskip - sweet days and her last kiss

I felt a little conflicted about this one. Firstly, I thought My Dead Girlfriend’s side was great and surprisingly engaging for Shoegaze. The drumming, especially on “We Eat in the Subway and Pass Over His Comment in Silence” was full of energy and I found myself loving the inclusion of synthesizers on tracks like “Kinoshita Fuyou”. It’s got a great, heavy atmosphere without being too sleepy, which is a trap I’ve found a lot of Shoegaze falls into. ... read more

Beautiful Album. Throughly enjoyed pretty much all the tracks on here and had a very fun time this week looping through it again and again. I loved how the lively and upbeat frontend contrasted the backend, which had a more melancholy and reflective sound. While I do think this got a little mushy in the middle, specifically with the 2 tracks “How I Do” and “The Hustler”, they are easily overshadowed by the groovy soulful bangers that appear all around them. ... read more

Good album! Made me feel like I was dozing off on a cloud high in the sky. Loved the atmosphere across this whole thing even though some of the tracks felt a little derivative of each other. Nonetheless there was still a plethora of great songs on here. Obviously all the material from this that would later be utilized on the band’s future projects are wonderful, but special mention to “Nlogax” and “June 9th” which I really enjoyed. A lot of the exclusive stuff on ... read more

Death Grips - Government Plates

Very enjoyable album, even if it is a little weak by Death Grips standards. While I love the idea of the band expanding their sound into deconstructed club, the material presented here feels scatterbrained and mostly unrealized. However, I still do love a good chunk of the tracks.

All the songs that focus on Ride, like “Two Heavens”, “ Anne Bonny”, and “Big House”, are great, fun bangers and feature that signature Death Grips energy and spunk. Special ... read more

God - Breach Birth

Fun little noise rock EP. While I'm not too big on the vocals, the instrumentation on display here is pretty damn groovy and enjoyable. Definitely worth a listen if you're into the genre. I'm very eager to see how God evolves this sound on their future projects.

Swans - Holy Money

More interesting than Greed but definitely still worse than Cop. Has all the same pitfalls as the other No Wave Swans records but with some nice fuller instrumentation here and there. I enjoyed the backing vocals on “A Hanging”, the new compositions on “Fool” and “Money is Flesh”, and thought the inclusion of “You Need Me” was a great switch up from the normal Swans formula. Sadly though, I still just don’t really jive with this style of ... read more

Received some #healings from this one. Overall a great and expressive lofi midwest emo album that even reminds me of Brave Little Abacus at some points, which is a HUGE compliment. Loved the energy across this whole thing and while I was a little apprehensive about the lofi sound at first, after a few listens I can safety say that it suits the album really well. I do think there’s a few too many slower songs here for me to give this an 8.5, but I still would highly recommend you listen to ... read more

The Brave Little Abacus - Masked Dancers: concern in so many things you forget where you are

This absolutely blew me away! The vocalist, instrumentation, and lyrics are all extremely unique, raw, emotional and make for an incredible experience! I can see how the singer’s voice may be a little off putting to some at first, but once it clicks it’s stellar! This is also, like, CRAZY as a debut album. Highly recommend!!!

Tyler, The Creator - GROUP B

Really smooth Tyler single! The beat is super lowkey and Tyler’s deeper voice meshes really nice with it. Also has some pretty fun bars

Truly, genuinely awful. I don’t think I could make a worse song if I tried. Someone should really check up on Drake and make sure he’s okay after green lighting this.
