A strong contender for best album of 2016, this Bon Iver record takes apart all previous notions of BI songwriting to rearrange and resample them masterfully in a way that simultaneously feels fresh and familiar. Each track on this record has its own identity while still feeling like part of a whole.
This album has some great upbeat songwriting and production work. Unfortunately some of Francis' vocal tricks and production choices lose their power after being used repeatedly track after track. This leads to an album that has amazing singles but could've been so much better with a bit more diversity.
More subtle and understated than last year's 'Farewell, Starlite!', this short but beautiful album feels more like Francis playing backstage to his close friends before going out and playing an energized set.
The songs here are often muted and their beauty comes from small moments and production flourishes.
