I think this will take a few more listens to really click. It went to some interesting places – I wasn't expecting it to sound so experimental in parts. Takeaways from first listen are 'Indigo Park', 'Memory Palace' and 'Sliver of Time'.
With a Little Help from My Friends is probably Joe's true must-listen album, but there's a lot to gain from his later albums too. Hard Knocks was his most commercially successful record, especially in Germany, where this album earned his first and only No. 1 album. Beautiful way for Joe to bow out. This is my favourite album from his discography – the title track, I'll Be Your Doctor, You Love Me Back, You Don't Need a Million Dollars, Younger... so many great songs matched by a clean, heavy production by Matt Serletic.
Absolutely haunting record. I was studying at Leeds College of Music when he toured this album and I passed on the chance to see him in the concert hall. Regretted it ever since. Favourites are "Pentacostal", "Driver", "Death Rides a White Horse" and "Shade of the Sun".
I got this from the band's website pre-release and had it on repeat all week. Time of Your Life was recorded over two nights at an acoustic live show last year. There's nothing from their second album, Delectable, but their debut gets a good showing with "Colour You a Smile", "Wild Child" and "Don't Break My Heart", and I think the stripped back sound really shows off Leigh Matty's great vocal and the songwriting quality across their whole ... read more
