Like a Clockwork: Uma Odisseia Entre a Vida e a Morte
Bom, como descrever "... Like Clockwork"?
"I had surgery on my leg and there were complications and I died on the table. I was in bed for three months."
"If life is but a dream
Then wake me up"
"Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing, only a signal shown, and a distant voice in the darkness; So on the ocean of life, we pass and speak one another, only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence."
I speak, I breathe, I'm incomplete."
"If I had a tail, I'd own the night
If I had a tail, I'd swat the flies"
"The hardest thing to do is tell someone you love them, because you have to put yourself out there. And when you really love somebody you basically say:“Whatever you have to do to me, you have to do. And I’m willing to let that happen.” So this song is partially about letting that happen and on the other side saying it’s okay."
"Headaches at the temple of the closed mind
Closed mind
Closed mind
Closed blinds"
"Calling all comas
Prisoner on the loose; description"
O prisioneiro do seu próprio coma perdeu seu coração e segue a vida com um buraco sem preenchimento em formato de coração, um "heart-shaped hole where the hope runs out".
"Shock me awake and tear me apart" é uma alusão a sua quase morte, que seguiu por um coma, deixando ele prisioneiro do próprio sono.
"Pinned like a note in a hospital gown
Prisoner of sleep, deeper down
The rabbit hole, never to be found"
"I go missing, no longer exist
One day, I hope I'm someone you'd miss"

Like Clockwork: A Life-and-Death Odyssey
Well, how to describe "... Like Clockwork"? The album was released after Josh Homme's fateful accident and contains countless references, not only about what happened, but how the artist dealt with it, his dark feelings that made him feel like a walking dead man, or even a living corpse, leaving his essence in the hospital bed as he said in interviews.
"I had surgery on my leg and there were complications and I died on the table. I was in bed for three months."
So how did this experience impact the album? Josh stated that the experience made him feel as if he had died, lost his essence—but it was liberating, he felt free after waking up, so he recorded "... Like Clockwork", the sixth album of his band, Queens of the Stone Age. It is important to emphasize that this story related to his complication in the surgery impacts all the tracks on the album.
๐ต "Keep Your Eyes Peeled" is the album's opening track. Here we have Josh's first reflections on his coma. Referencing "Alice in Wonderland," he alludes to the idea that if life is a dream (as said in the book), he would rather wake up.
"If life is but a dream
Then wake me up"
This beginning of the album introduces the listener to Josh's psyche, who, while believing he has a spark of hope for the future, ends up getting lost in negative thoughts, which reflects his emotional and physical pain, as he hints at in the lyric 'Shotgun, never behind the wheel,' a reference to his post-surgical limitations.
In "I Sat By the Ocean", we see Homme's downfall, his addiction to alcohol and how he regrets past relationships. Note that "Silence is closer, we're passing ships in the night" works as an allusion to casual sex without feelings, and is also interpreted by some fans as an allusion to a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, about solitude.
"Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing, only a signal shown, and a distant voice in the darkness; So on the ocean of life, we pass and speak one another, only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence."
The first song written by Homme, "The Vampyre of Time and Memory", the third song on the album, explains how his recovery and mental stabilization were helped by friends (such as Trent Razor, member of the band Nine Inch Nails), but that even after all the evolution of his mental state, Homme feels alone.
"I've survived
I speak, I breathe, I'm incomplete."
Analyzing "If I Had a Tail", it seemed to me a lot like a rant about Homme's post-surgery incapacity due to the absence of certain functions, if he "had a tail, he would rule the night". However, the most widely accepted interpretation among QOTSA fans is that song portrays the uncontrollable feelings of human beings, it is only the absence of a tail that differentiates us from lions and wolves.
"If I had a tail, I'd own the night
If I had a tail, I'd swat the flies"
Researching in depth about the lyrics of "My God is the Sun", I discovered that it is all about a mythological allusion to the analogous relationship between Dionysus and Apollo, one being a god related to excess and irrationality (Dyonysus), the other being the god of wisdom and dedication, Apollo, also known as "God of the Sun". Using this context, Homme directs his attention to Apollo, he wants to follow the rational path, his god is the sun.
๐ต "Kalopsia", seeing everything from a positive perspective, using rose-colored glasses in a gray world, seeing beauty in what is not so beautiful, this is the definition of the song title, Josh commented that this song was written in honor of his children, he also explained what the song is about, and there is nothing better than the composer explaining his ideas, right?
"The hardest thing to do is tell someone you love them, because you have to put yourself out there. And when you really love somebody you basically say: “Whatever you have to do to me, you have to do. And I’m willing to let that happen.” So this song is partially about letting that happen and on the other side saying it’s okay."
Leaving the more tragic and melancholic mood of Kalopsia, we arrive at "Fairweather Friends", here the idea is simple, to tell how while some friends supported him in his difficult times, others just left. And here we have an unexpected collaboration, Elton John appears with a piano that contrasts with the guitars and all the chaos of Josh.
"We gave Elton John the song 'Fairweather Friends', which is not an easy song to learn. All the piano on the record is him playing. Elton John started by playing nothing but the roots of the song on the piano, which was already incredible, respectful and in an experienced way. Then, after about 20 minutes, he said to us: 'Now, I'm going to start to blossom this in a little bit more'. Watching him create all that was fucking awesome, you know? We played for 3 and a half hours and that's how long it took to get this song complete."
Smooth Sailing" is a sigh of relief from Josh, here we have a celebration in relation to subverting society, he can do anything, he does whatever he wants, he can even criticize sacred figures!
"Headaches at the temple of the closed mind
Closed mind
Closed mind
Closed blinds"
And finally, we arrive at Josh Homme's magnum opus, his masterpiece, his final ace up his sleeve... "I Appear Missing" is the song that condenses everything Homme felt and feels in relation to the tragic accident.
"Calling all comas
Prisoner on the loose; description"
The prisoner of his own coma has lost his heart and continues his life with an unfilled heart-shaped hole, a "heart-shaped hole where hope runs out".
"Shock me awake and tear me apart" is an allusion to his near death, which followed by a coma, leaving him a prisoner of his own sleep.
"Pinned like a note in a hospital gown
Prisoner of sleep, deeper down
The rabbit hole, never to be found"
Nobody wants to be forgotten and just disappear, Josh also wants to be remembered.
"I go missing, no longer exist
One day, I hope I'm someone you'd miss"
To close this piece, here’s one last sword strike. "...Like Clockwork", the song that gives the album its name, comes to break hearts with its piano, telling of its regrets and closing everything with "One thing that is clear, it's all downhill from here", pure nihilism from Josh, nothing matters.
"...Like Clockwork" isn’t just an album — it’s a symbol of Josh Homme’s rebirth. He left everything he had in that hospital bed, but built something entirely new when he got back up.
