I really enjoyed this album. I don't understand why it's so poorly rated. The vocals may not be spectacular, but the music as a whole is very interesting. The arrangements are good, bassist plays very well, guitar is ok and some songs are reminiscent of Gene Lovez Jezebel. For those who like new wave, I strongly recommend it. I have the 17 song edition/version.
Aux Deux Magots is an album that reflects the natural evolution of a band that was born with a new wave sound, endured the curse of a mega-hit (Oh Susie) on their debut album, and a few less creative albums that remained hidden in the shadow of their big hit. On this 1987 album, Secret Service presents a sound much more pop than new wave. Some songs even recall Alphaville tracks. Overall, it's a good pop album, without a doubt. Beautiful songs, good arrangements, and a balanced sound.
Van Stephenson being Van Stephenson. Just another Van stephenson album. Not a big deal.
If I could use only one word to describe this album, it would be: dispensable. Yes, it's not a terrible album, but it's one that really doesn't make sense in any collection because the songs are okay, but not memorable. It feels like one of those bureaucratic albums made just to fulfill a record deal. Non-impressive, non-creative. My favorite track: None. Style: AOR.
After their surprising debut album, Secret Service went through a few years of lack of inspiration. Now, on this fifth album, released in 1985, the band once again delivers beautiful melodies, catchy pop arrangements, and carefully crafted harmonies. At times, the sound even recalls A-Ha, which isn't a bad thing at all. Good, beautiful songs, worth listening to at your leisure.
