Although initially promising, Burqa Boyz changes the sonic character of their tracks so much that they really lose a sense of identity. The most exciting moments from this mixtape are when things get quiet and more reserved (see 3:16-3:32 on track one). But the chaos doesn't ever really lead to anything exciting.
Experimental dance music is becoming more mainstream. Among the hipsters who have brought it to popularity, there's a notion that an edgy artist concept (in this case, two ... read more
Look at any of the promotional material for Taylor Swift's "The Life of a Showgirl" and you'll find her dressed up like a 1920s flapper, a 1990's Eurodisco star, or a Vegas Showgirl. But listening to this album feels less like Taylor Swift is dazzling and sparkling and more like she's dazed and confused (and really tired). The production and mixing is top-notch, and Mica's vocal performance never dissapoints. ... read more

The whole record has incredible narrative storytelling in the songwriting. It makes me wish I heard this when I was in high school because it's so depressing ... read more
This concept is executed so so well. Especially all of "Paper Planes" and also the lyrics on "BirdFlu". Turning the experience of being denied a visa into the United States into an opportunity for a unique music concept, and turning the experience of the Global South into dance music, takes incredible skill and tact, and M.I.A. delivers.
There are SO many cool elements on "Bamboo Banga." I loved the blending of modern vs vintage genres toward the end where it goes ... read more
