Brotha Lynch Hung - Mannibalector

There is something great about Brotha Lynch Hung but he exposes himself far too much - or at least, he doesn't nuance himself into having a second dimension. Mannibalector succeeds in two things fabulously (1) As an exercise in dark lyrics that are absolutely vile and twisted from beginning to end, it provides an absolute blast of shock value with an aim at controversy and making the audience wince at the bars (2) As an introduction to the well established persona of Brotha Lynch Hung who imagines himself as a psychopath that is just furiously talented at rap. He growls during his singing like a primalistic animal and declares himself one of the most unhinged creeps ever.

It isn't a creepy album though, the horror exists through the tube of entertainment, and that's fine - I like me some lyrical gorefests but missed two things, and that is some sense of tragedy or doubtfulness in the persona of Lynch Hung. As if he has a brief window of consciousness of what he is preaching and praying. He is - according to his lyrics - a cannibal, a murderer, a rapist, a sadist and a madman. Isn't there an opening for breaking of character as if he is sick? That would be great. The second thing I missed is the sense of creepiness beyond the lyrics. We're always the friends of Lynch Hung - never the victims of his evil. I'd like some twists and turns against the audience themselves. That would absolutely make this album complete.
The soundscaping, some of the inventive lyricisms and rapping however are an absolute delight. It is fresh even though obviously it's a rotten vibe. The voices are demonic and sharp as if they're able to cut and bite at all times. Never does the darkness of this album sounds like a bluff. Brotha Lynch Hung and his featuring artists are artists that feel like they're from an underworld. All the vocals really sell their darkness with convincing realism - they're really sinking their teeth in the bloody mess with voices that sound pleased at doing what they do. I like the little twists and fantasies that Brotha Lynch Hung adds to his characters: the growls, the barfs and grease in his words really completes his dark side - now some self reflection and he has a fantastic character. The album really does establish a vibe that feels like serial killer nightvibes in a downtown urban environment. It surrounds itself in the most narrow, craunchy streets in the city.
This is mainly due to the evergreen instrumentals that combine many worlds of rap into a rich world that has a fantastic amount of worldbuilding. It is sometimes deathly and feverdreaming but sometimes just has fun with it's musical components in a way that is just plain entertaining. I could accuse the album of many things but never of repetitveness or laziness like so many rap albums. This album has so many good qualities, too bad the thematics are just not pin pointed to greatness. Components of Mannibalector include instruments from the highest normality like classical piano and from the most obscure sources - they make for a chiling contrast. Often elements such as a buzzing fly or someone slushing and gushing is added in the background to add to the evils of it all. The lyrics, you'll have to hear for yourself but it is insane how much vileness and disgust they pack in this baby, it is hardcore metallic in wordplay. The rawness and dimness that should be present here is really here.

Despite a relatively mediocre rating, I really do recommend this artist and this album in general. There is so much greatness here and it is very rich in musicality and variations. It is clearly a product from a grossly talented bunch of individuals, if only they could make the final switch to greatness and explored the other side of the coin - Then this album would have a much higher rating from me. Brotha Lynch Hung is a type that is so unique and talented that he has to make more music and explore his persona's corners to an extent that this album doesn't quite reach.
