Oops!... I Did It Again signals an attempt at maturation from those who attempted to carefully curate the image that Britney Spears personified. Perhaps her representation figured that the childhood innocence (from a legitimate teenager, need you be reminded) wouldn't sell records, thus they thrusted her into the role of the temptress at eighteen years of age. While the idea of sexualizing an eighteen year old girl remains abhorrent on the tongue, this record does offer a glimpse into the genuine personality of Ms. Britney Spears. There are the traits of natural teenage spunk, the shy and simplistic intimacy that consumes the lives of youth in a lighthearted, wholesome capacity, while also dipping her toes into the torrential waters that grapple with fame and the ruthless teeth within the jaws of the media. At such a young age she was already wary of the isolation that her celebrity status could inflict, along with the caution required of her with the scent of her blood making the press salivate. What was invisible on ...Baby One More Time is overt in her lyricism this time around. Her second record feels like a project of her own construction, not something she inherited simply to exemplify her unprecedented vocal ability. That isn't to suggest her second effort is flawless to any extent, as the production winds up extremely repetitive, inflicting an unfortunate bout of predictability across the track list. Oops!... I Did It Again does benefit from a production that offers some variables, however, that are manipulated into some energetic instrumental patterns, allowing those behind the scenes to scatter some implements to avoid the tracks becoming identical. It would have benefit from further differentiation, along with an alteration of the album's hind leg which drags its feet, but these would be concepts refined with time. Spears' vocals remain exquisite, the soul inspiration being the product of icons, and her ad-libs honing such a rhythmic quality that truly asserts herself as a stupendous vocalist. She doesn't receive the credit she deserves — not even in the vicinity. Oops!... I Did It Again allows Spears to separate herself from the simplistic formats that hindered her debut, albeit behind some unimaginative, at times, song structures, while continuing her vocal dominance and evolving her written ability
