Another great indie album from this band at the forefront of the latest generation of Americana pioneers. Created during the breakup of lead singer Karly Hartzman and guitarist (and 2024’s solo indie breakthrough star) MJ Lenderman, the album shows a range of emotions balanced by the emotional catharsis of letting it out through the music. Lyrically, the mood shifts, and there are some great memorably funny lines on here, but the album works best for me as a sonic blanket of warm twangy ... read more
It certainly sounds a lot like a new TV On The Radio album, but is not getting the promotional push of a tour because of Tunde’s commitment to touring with TVOTR. I won’t complain because getting more TVOTR in any form is great - I would, however, like to hear some of these songs get the live treatment because it is a very strong album.
There are electronic pulses and rhythms that give some tracks that high-energy band sound that we have gotten over the years from TVOTR, the one ... read more
This might be Hamilton Leithauser’s best overall album since The Walkmen released anything— and maybe even pips a few of those albums too. His gravelly bar room voice is so unique, and nothing particularly new musically is added here, yet the album seems to be one where he ... read more
“Don’t tap that glass there is a monster in it”. A quick and fun party album, after the healing album where Tyler expunged some inner demons. Without having had time to examine lyrics too long, Tyler seems less interested in internal introspection, rather letting loose with some fun and funky dance beats - there is a good healthy variety of melodic and rhythmic mood swings thrown in too. “Sugar On My Tongue” is the most immediate track that could be a hit, but the ... read more
A triumphant album created under the most heartbreaking circumstances. Ben Kweller is a singer-songwriter from Texas who has been working hard as a singer-songwriter since being a teenage rockstar propelled to minor fame in the wake of Nirvana, in one of my favorite one-and-done bands of the 90s, “Radish”. Ben sings that he is not optimistic on the first track of side B, and the name of the album, “Hide The Mirrors,” hints that he is afraid to look closely at the pain he ... read more
