Bjork is an artist that I have always been looking forward to listening to ever since I found out how acclaimed her artistry is basically a modern legend. Her voice is iconic, her music from another universe, her legacy is cosmic. I'm so ready to see what the hype is all about.
Now about her voice and with the few songs I have heard her from, I up to this point has mostly been repulsive towards it. It sounded a bit harsh and forced to my ears. Hopefully this was due to me being uncultured back then since the last couple of times I have heard her strikingly unique vocals I actually not only did not mind them as much, I actually liked them and saw them as a feature that enhanced the sonic experience. So hopefully as I dive into this """""""""""debut"""""""""""" of hers, I continue this trend instead of being that one guy who can't get past her vocals. Let's see how it goes.
Human Behavior:
Pretty basic intro with simple production and easy to follow lyrics. The song does well to introduce the audience to Bjork's vocal style by highlighting it but not being too over the top with it. A solid way to start things off. (70)
Crying:
The production is a bit more involved here and Bjork lets loose a bit more. I liked the structure and composition as well. The only thing that didn't sit right about me was the chorus. Seemed a bit hamfisted and don't kill me but the Bjork's voice felt forced as well for me. So while this song is a little more ambitious, it didn't quite stick the landing for me unfortunately. I did enjoy the way it finished off though. (60)
Venus as a Boy:
I just adore this production. So nostalgic and unique. Hits all the right chords. And here's a first for me, Bjork sounds beautiful here. She is usually solid at best for me in my limited exposure to her, but here she is almost angelic. I think I am warming up to her voice so the screeches of Bjork defenders can start quieting down now. It's ok, I'm on your side. Anyways this song is the best so far, and could have easily have taken things further with how enchanted I got from the experience. However, with what's presented here, I still got plenty out of it. There's More to Life Than This (Live Version):
We have a live house track here and it's ok. Didn't do much for me. (50)
Like Someone in Love:
We strip things down for a slow ballad. The harp(?) and ambient atmosphere are good as well Bjork handling the vocals solidly. It's good for what it is, but not too memorable. (70)
Big Time Sensuality:
We are invited back to the house as the party rolls on. It seems to not be much of a rouser though. (50)
One Day:
Whoa the shit that's happening to my ears. Absolutely lush atmosphere and our queen sounds straight majestic here. Now this is more worthy of the hysteria I hear surrounding this artist. Damn that was great! (90)
Aeroplane:
I always love myself a seamless transition. We are getting a bit jazzy in the jungle here for this one. Like the last track this is just so lush, fertile, and full of biodiversity. A great continuation of the vibes set up in the last track though it's not quite as striking. (85)
Come to Me:
The streak of Quality music continues as Bjork asks us to come closer. It's dreamy, comforting, and a bit wistful. Really good stuff right here. (90)
Violently Happy:
We go into a more sparse yet intriguing direction before things slowly ramp up to the dance party again. Damn solid build up.👍 Though I appreciate this track it doesn't leave as strong of an impression as the previous three. (70)
The Anchor Song:
We close off the unofficial official debut of the alien queen with the rude spit of salt ocean breeze and the smell rotting fish. Not to say the song is bad, I just got got this vision while listening. The song is an ok way to close things, and does well to pick a unique direction, but I didn't find it all that interesting. 765/11= 69.54 round up to 70 since it's practically there.
Looks to be a mixed bag as a lot of debuts are. There's some good some great and some just ok. PLENTY of potential and room to grow and we are already at a pretty solid foundation to build off of. I'm looking forward to seeing where the siren takes us in her next album.
