While About felt deeply depressed, I Can't Wait... feels manically anxious. The unstable bpms, the changing time signatures, the jarring shifts between ambient synths, hardcore, and glitchy noise - it all aids in making this album feel like a panic attack. This one is a little worse than About overall since I find some songs to drag a little (especially Misery, it feels out of place), something I can't say about a single song in About. I prefer this albums concept, though, and the ... read more
God, all the Hyi albums are good. I don't really have the words to describe my thoughts on this album. The hardcore moments sound like moments of anger like in She Spoke of It, or of bursts of hope like in Centaur. Yet it never stops being so thoroughly depressed. I dunno, this album is just really beautiful and emotional. Not quite perfect, but close. Highlights include She Spoke of It, Inside Out Star Tree, Centaur, and Take Care, Lady Legs
This album is great. My only real critique is that the majority of the tracks feel disconnected from each other and not as fleshed out as they could be, but that's sorta the point, isn't it? Those elements add to the (for lack of better terms) lore; the tracks are little audial experiments Darius has been toying with, and now he's sharing them with you. I also quite like the fact that this album loops. Maybe not the worlds most original concept, but again, I love what it adds to ... read more
What an amazing comeback for Mayhem! I much prefer this direction over her older stuff. I always found her use of chiptune synths a bit grating and that her stuff was generally just a bit bland, but this has entirely fixed that. Every tracks a banger. It opens with its weakest song, which is unfortunate, but Nu Way Thru is still fun and enjoyable. A very solid album overall. Highlights include Mistswimmer and Weatherboy.
Everything I said about the original version of this album applies, but I think this version is better. The edited versions of THE CANDY PUMP and DON'T QUIT FRIENDS are better, INSIDE 99999999999999999999999999999 is a super fun song that I quite enjoy, and STAY-C'S MUM... well, that song sucks, but it doesn't ruin the album or anything lol.
