Upon first listen, I was afraid that this would be a dud. I mean, I was wondering what new lengths Interpol could go to create a new fresh sound. To be honest, this album sort of feels like a Turn On The Bright Lights 2, however, it does hold its own merit.
Antics is a non-stop blast of amazing songs. It’s an album that shows Interpol is not just a one hit album band. While it kinda feels like they don’t do anything new on this album, it still sounds amazing.
Tracks like *Evil*, *Slow Hands*, and *C’mere* have such catchy riffs and pumps you up for the album. On the other hand, tracks like *Narc*, *Not Even Jail*, and *Public Pervert* showcases Interpol’s dreamy and dark atmospheric sound.
The opening track, *Next Exit*, and the closing track, *A Time To Be Small* really feel like it’s trying to copy the format of Turn Off The Bright Lights. They’re good songs, but I feel like it’s just trying to capture the same feel their debut had, but they should’ve tried something new.
The album has a glaring theme of toxic relationships that is actually quite interesting reading up on. For example, *Evil* is a track about the real life serial killer couple, The Wests, and *Take You On A Cruise* is about an obnoxious man trying to persuade a woman for sexual pleasure.
The sound of this album holds up. It doesn’t have the same feel as their debut, which was dark and somber, but it has this amazing sound palette that makes you feel like rocking out in space. The thing is, the sound feels like it’s trying to emulate the same sound as TOTBL which isn’t really a bad thing, but like i’ve been saying throughout this review, I would’ve liked it if they tried something new.
Overall though, I had lots of fun with this album. The last leg of the album doesn’t really connect with me as much as the rest of the album, but that’s fine. I would’ve preferred a better outro, that’s all.
