The Slow Rush is a properly structured, coherent listening experience from start to finish.
Obviously some of these tracks are more of a popularity hit than others, but most of them are incredibly high quality, with few exceptions.
One More Hour is a song I want to talk about specifically; It’s one of the best finale tracks I’ve heard to date. It wraps up the album beautifully, being the successor of One More Year. The lyric ‘I’m with you and I can roll into another year’ loops back onto One More Year, adding depth to the album and extra re listen value.
Breathe Deeper is one of my favourite tracks of all time, as well. I have a super strong, personal connection with the song, and it’s helped me through the worst times of my life. It’s lyric writing like on Breathe Deeper that makes The Slow Rush truly great.
Lost In Yesterday is also great, with even more exceptional lyric writing.
90 > 100
Here I am, bumping up my rating of this album. Why? Because I looked at the lyrics some more, and remembered how poetic they are. Take Tomorrows Dust for instance, with the lyric ‘and in the air of today, is tomorrows dust’. This song took a while to click in my mind, both sonically and lyrically, but I understand what it means now. What’s unsettled today could settle tomorrow. It’s all about the passage of time, and healing through it.
I used to dislike On Track and One More Year, because I found the production to be weak. However, my opinion has changed as, once again, the lyrics are incredible. On Track is certainly very straightforward, but it still works. One More Year changes after the first time you listen to the album. Although it’s the same song, it takes on a whole new meaning after One More Hour, which is why that song is such an incredible finale, but the praise also goes to One More Year. Just, not as high.
The Slow Rush just never misses with its lyric writing; Breathe Deeper is an absolute masterpiece with its storytelling and how personal it feels, Lost In Yesterday continues to be profound with ‘eventually terrible memories turn into great ones’, and Borderline I won’t go into because everyone’s already said everything I could say. The lyric writing ability shown off Is not just a one off thing in a few songs, it is a consistent standard present in the whole record. It’s brilliant.
