If this album was a color, it would be beige. Nothing special about it but somehow it ends up on nearly every minivan in existence.
These intimate singer-songwriter albums are out of my wheelhouse. I would normally just sample the album and move right along but the high critic praise of this album, and pretty much all of Laura Marling's work, made this album a must listen.
The two biases I bring to this album are 1) I love drums and percussion in albums and 2) I'm never really drawn to lyrics as much as how emotional tone is conveyed through the music as paired with vocals. This album fails on both levels for me, so it was going to be an uphill battle from the start.
I can respect this type of music and understand that my biases are subjective. Nonetheless, I'll just be honest and say I think this is highly overrated by critics.
