Such a boring album with really basic lyricism. P!nk’s voice is great but the material doesn’t do it any justice.
Mariah sounds much more settled into the qualities of her new voice on this record, with some of the more distracting colours banished since Butterfly. The embrace of more electronic R&B elements really works. At the forefront of every song is still Mariah’s voice however. She is able to navigate trending music production styles with grace due to her excellent musicality and richness of tone.
Phenomenal tone but the latter half of this album is an absolute snooze fest. Running theme of my reviews is teenage voices just don’t do it for me. Maybe no one should be able to make an album until they hit 20…
Moments of hope were dashed against moments of cringe. 90s R&B always teeters on cheesy and this one just tips a bit too far that way for me. Teenage Beyonce vocals are also too slightly on the whingey side but still incredibly impressive.
Highly appreciate the musical stylings but some of the songs start to drag. This is mainly because of Jay Kay’s vocal colours being pretty limited. Canned Heat is the strongest song on the album so it’s harder to stick with it the longer the album goes on. Good fun though.
I really wanted it to, but this album didn’t speak to me. While there were moments of glory, so much of the album washed over me and I couldn’t grab onto something to keep me afloat. Lauryn Hill’s tone is next level, but the riffs and runs are too jittery for my taste. The vocal layering feels too close to me on several tracks, which almost makes it sound pitchy even when it isn’t. The lyrics are strong for sure, but the subject matter is stuff I don’t typically ... read more
While Crush is an incredible song, the goodwill it earned wears off about halfway through the album. Jennifer’s voice is lovely, but for some reason it is always in danger of sounding sharp throughout the album. When the performance and writing couldn’t excite me, I wanted to let the vibe carry me into liking what is an otherwise completely mediocre effort. Sadly, the vibes are just not strong enough.
A solid bop and a true classic. Instantly recognisable, funky and still quite chic.
Extremely 90s but in the best way. I am transported to the time rather than it feeling dated. So atmospheric and Madonna’s voice perfectly suits the spaciousness provided by the production. Somehow doesn’t come across as cultural appropriation even though it probably is.
Gotta love a post-divorce rebrand album. I feel like the second half of the album loses me a bit, but when you can make out what she’s saying the lyrics are impressive. The airy vocals are finding their feet on this project so sometimes come across a bit jarring, but overall the vibe is perfectly 90s.
