vianova - Hit It!

This is my first time reviewing a metal album, but I have been fairly avidly listening to the genre for about a year and I feel like I can say a thing or two.
I first came across Vianova with the single Whatever Alright, and that made me fall in love. It is incredibly powerful and all the sounds just work together, which for an alt metal song one may even consider maximalist, is a big feat if achieved.
I gave the entire album a shot and I have to say: it is very confusing and weird? Yes, absolutely, and it’s clear they were going for that. I wouldn’t say it’s innovation that they’ve brought, but the song structures and the tempo switches that occur in the vast majority of those songs allow for freedom of creativity that is reflected all across the project. My only problem with their composing is that they sometimes resorted to gimmicks within the structure only, while their potential is immense on all levels - we have seen it with their singles.
I have heard complaints about the mixing and honestly I understand them. Some songs are just ruined by a poor mixing choice, which focuses a lot more on the blend of sound and voice than on the understanding of the lyrics. The effect is that the louder parts of some songs end up being a mess, the screams in Future Nostalgia sound like Donald Duck for instance… (I’m sorry, I just can’t unhear it)
It is a fairly common issue across the tracklist and it ruins the album experience for me. It is still very much decent though, and I recommend listening to Mas Rapido, Melanchronic, the aforementioned Whatever Alright and Uh Yaya as they are in my opinion the best tracks and good examples of their creativity composing.
