I won’t lie, I wasn’t sure how Beyoncé was going to sound on a country album. I didn’t necessarily doubt her, but I had some reservations. Thankfully, she exceeded my expectations.
I wouldn’t say this album is perfect. I’m not usually one to complain about the length of an album, but this album is rather long. 27 tracks is certainly pushing it. I also appreciate her blurring the boundaries between genres, but I found that some tracks, such as ... read more
This album is FUN, and sometimes that’s all I need from an album. Sure, it doesn’t have the most poetic lyrics I’ve ever heard, but good songwriting isn’t solely about sophisticated lyricism. The process of songwriting encapsulates the melody, the background vocals, the production, all of which is consistent in quality throughout the album. I wouldn’t say that any track in particular falls flat (although ‘Dumb & Poetic’ is arguably the weakest track ... read more
Brat has been an inescapable phenomenon these past few months. I have to admit, as a huge fan of Brat, I was ecstatic when Charli announced a remix album.
I truly appreciate Charli’s decision to properly remix each and every track on this album. She’s really breathed new life into some of these tracks. Some remixes are not quite as strong as others, but no track on the album falls entirely flat. Some have departed so drastically from the originals that they almost sound like an ... read more
‘The Tortured Poets Department’ is, simply put, a messy project. It oscillates between incredible highs and frustrating lows. It is a poorly constructed amalgamation of her previous three albums; her attempts to channel the lyrical prowess of ‘folklore’ and ‘evermore’ prove only moderately successful. She soars on tracks such as ‘So Long, London’, ‘The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived’ and ‘loml’, but she also offers us ... read more
‘Moon Music’ is (thankfully) a significant improvement from Coldplay’s previous effort, ‘Music of the Spheres’. Of course, that really isn’t saying much; ‘Music of the Spheres’ was a terribly uninspired mishap for Coldplay, which is why I found myself saying ‘thank goodness’ aloud multiple times whilst listening to this album.
It certainly isn’t perfect. There are an agonising number of ‘la’s’ littered ... read more
