final thoughts: gnx
this album is not bad at all. it may not be kendrick's strongest, but it 100% is not his worst either. the versatility, flows, and lyricism are all top notch that bring back section 80 vibes.
a bit different than what i expected concept wise, i was going in thinking this was a diss album towards drake with "wacced out murals" and "squabble up" sounding like disses to drake. but as i continued, it sounds more as kendrick cementing himself as THE west coast rapper and saviour.
the production and beats are yet again showing why patience is kendrick's top virtue. taking his time when it comes to song making is why kendrick succeeds. mustard on "tv off" is probably why it stands out the most out of any songs here. not to mention "heart pt. 6" is one of the best editions of kendrick's "the heart" series.
although with all these highs, there are definitely lots of lows.
some of these tracks are just straight up snoozers which seem like next to nothing to enrich the album. a big example being the title track, "gnx". the beats are some of the worst honestly from kendrick.
overall, the back half of this album seems like it was rushed outside of "heart pt. 6" just to be released as soon as possible. the back half is not strong at all.
although the lows do impact the album a bit, that does not take away the fact that this album is definitely one of kendrick's best flow and lyricism wise.
i am feeling a strong 8 to a light 9 on this album.
