The Lemon Twigs - Look for Your Mind!
90

The intense talent, attention to detail, and immersiveness is still wonderful on the latest LP. Makes me miss growing up with my dad and getting to watch him sing in the car if a James Taylor song came on. Although some people may not be as appreciative, I am totally swooned and can't wait to watch them continue.

My New Band Believe - My New Band Believe
75

Cameron writes really good songs. Wish he goes in an even more art rock/prog route and gives us a fuller experience on the next record.

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
100

classic - but Glitter Freeze is FUCKING ANNOYING

Gorillaz - The Mountain
80

A spiritual successor to Plastic Beach - with its postmortem collaborators being put on a powerful pedestal. "Look at my beautiful friends!"

James Blake - Trying Times

i love james blake

Wet Leg - moisturizer
65

Wet Leg's entrance in to modern rock gave mainstream life back to the genre back in 2022. After three years, they return much to the same aesthetic as before: youthful and direct rock songs about love and the complications of it.

The main issue here is that there is not much ambition on display. It fucks for the same reasons as the previous record, but half the songs on this album just end up being lesser versions of it. Catch These Fists just want to be another Chaise Longue but lacks ... read more

Little Simz - Lotus
95

Expansive, chaotic, borderline and euphoric - Lotus brings together the flowers that came from the roots of SIMBI and explores the vulnerabilities with even more intense experiences and stories. Incredible energy with amazing production to boot. Just amazing artistry and storytelling. Clear influences from Gorillaz, Kendrick Lamar, and even shadowier side of Brit Pop. However it feels nostalgic and referential - a space for Simz to execute the feeling to an extraordinary degree. This album ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
90

BCNR's reinvention is a successful stylistic left turn.

'Forever Howlong' is devoid of any emo from past releases and the feelings on the album are much more melodramatic and simple: loving is hard. The performances are perfect and the album clearly inspired by baroque-pop greats. Beatles, Kate Bush, lots of Fiona Apple and Joanna Newsom. There's lots of innocence here - but without the crushing self obliteration from "Ants from Up Here". So raw and vulnerable in ... read more

clipping. - Dead Channel Sky
70

clipping. enters Hackerman era of their noise-centric storytelling hip-hop saga.

A glitch-hop album relying a lot on the influencers of Techno, Noise, Industrial, and House to create a somewhat accessible release for the trio. My tastes want more experimentation and moments to scare the audience - other than the few interludes of surfing the black web. Otherwise it is catchy with even more standout performances from Daveed. Need more listens to fully love and appreciate this one.

Japanese Breakfast - For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)
75

Blissful production and ethereal aura brings Japanese Breakfast's newest album as a nice surprise given her funky alt-pop origins. A concice cohesive study in chamber pop. Hypnotic at points, pulling from inspirations like "Movie Picture Soundtrack" and a lot of Sufjan Stevens. Very well made, with only cons being a lack of addicting choruses and the most random Jeff Bridges feature.

Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun
100

Saw a tiktok rating this a 1 and had to immediately come here and give this thing a 100 out of spite.

I love this thing so much. By far the most gorgeous thing I ever heard, with an incredible amount of heart and wisdom. A pretty great blueprint for how to self-love and be proud your changes through life. What this thing has to say about the human experience, womanhood, and the lives you pass through are profound - even if it's just with short verses and the pillowy Roots production. I ... read more

Vulfpeck - Clarity of Cal
50

Pure talent meets diminishing returns. Vulfpeck's new - live - album is a short 11 track theater kid funk album that sacrifices their Ann Arbor origins for Cal's sun-tan lotion beaches and infiltration of inauthentic messes. Vulfpeck, we know your a greatly talented bunch of mid-westerners - but where'd the heart go? Silly kid-show songs like The Heist or IRL aren't out of the wheelhouse, but the guest vocalists and the absence of Theo and Jack's personalities make it ... read more

Lady Gaga - MAYHEM
95

Lady Gaga continues to stand as the pinnacle for pop perfection.

"Mayhem" is Gaga's most explosive and daring release of her career, even after Chromatica's attempt at honing on alternative and hyperpop aesthetics. This album is a constant build of energy throughout and offers unhinged performances. I imagine Lady Gaga punching mirrors and dancing until she passes out on the entirety of this record. Only exceptions being two sore spots: "How Bad Do U Want Me" and ... read more

SPELLLING - Destiny Arrives
100

Beautiful. Extremely moving. All the chills down my back.

Panda Bear - Sinister Grift
80

Where's my motherfucking maitai?!?!

I'm not into Animal Collective or its alumni, but Panda Bear was always the golden child pitched around music circles for a long time. Their music always ended up being puzzled abstractions with great musical experiments - but lacked meat or direction most of the time I tried it out. This time the direction is simple - ISLAND. Therefore, I am connected. Although this album takes an emotional dump by the last leg, it is consistently joyful and ... read more

Doves - Constellations for the Lonely
90

Fucking brilliant. Gorgeous stuff. Euphoric rock excursions with all your favorite influences and a ton of experiments that end up with satisfactory results.

Sam Fender - People Watching
75

Nostalgic kaleidoscope of both Springsteen and The Killers, with sweet performances to boot. This reminds me a lot of "Shot At the Night" era Killers with its arena-rock inspired structures. Production is great and just for pure vibes it will be played by that one friend who rebukes modern music (looking at you Brandon). Nothing extraordinary, but good!

Oklou - choke enough
70

A small and well made heady club music inspired by auto-crooners like Charli XCX and FKA Twigs. Not a lot of meat on the bones, but mixes are very good and themes resonate.

Mr. Bungle - California
100

90s absurdism bashed with every cliche in the book. An abrasive, jump scare of album. Borderline parody at every avenue of sonic left turns that leave first listeners floored and loud-is-funny enthusiasts extremely satisfied. All of this would result in an incredibly off-putting album, but Mike Patton and company's performances are legendary. Extreme staying power and continues to be fresh. Classic.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - V
85

This shit rules. Not as psychedelic or emotionally intense as previous releases, but the songs carry forlonging soft rock vibes that are unmatched by anyone else. It's like my favorite cereal - Fruity Pebbles. Always come back for more.
