Anderson .Paak - Malibu

I thoroughly enjoyed the fun, bouncy, 'wooooo I'm in LA and I'm high as fuck' sound of this album from Anderson .Paak. This was the album that got him on the map, and I love the production and singing and the very occasional rapping.

Songs like 'The Bird' sound heavenly when both of my AirPods are in, and other tracks like 'Your Prime' and 'The Dreamer' just make me feel like riding a bike in the sun while listening to these. Other songs ... read more

This record is probably one of the most inconsistent albums I have ever listened to. With spiritual songs such as 'Ultralight Beam' on one track, and then the painfully mediocre 'Pt. 2' on the next, this album is definitely a strange listen on your first time.

Contrast some of these tracks. 'Famous', an ego-filled tirade (in my opinion) about how Kanye made Taylor Swift famous, and telling her she owes him sex (?? You know you have a wife right there man) to ... read more

Kanye West - Yeezus

I think the more experimental, grimy sound of this album is really nice in concept, but the execution of some of these songs leaves something to be desired. This LP is quite inconsistent, with songs such as 'New Slaves' and 'Bound 2' being some of the best in his catalog, while others like 'I'm In It' and 'Send It Up' are okay at best.

This song talks about a lot of the shortcomings of Black culture, including how people are treated differently ... read more

Mac Miller - Circles
95

This is my most streamed album on Spotify, I think.

After Mac Miller died, it was revealed that there was supposed to be a companion album to Swimming, titled Circles. The whole schtick was that it was supposed to say "Swimming in Circles" to show that Mac was in this cycle of addiction.

All of the songs on here represent Malcolm McCormick fully. Even though he died before he could finish the album, the psychedelic synths and the 'chill' sound on here created from a Jon ... read more

Mac Miller - Swimming

I love this album so, so, much. Mac was going through a lot of stuff at this point, with his drug addiction ramping up, causing his girlfriend Ariana Grande to break up with him. To cope, he made this.

The whole theme of this album is Mac trying to "swim" away from his struggles instead of drowning himself in them.

I love the jazzy yet calm production of every song, from 'Come Back to Earth' to 'Self Care' to 'Small Worlds'. Mac was taken from us too ... read more

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
95

After the whole Taylor Swift fiasco, Kanye retreated to Hawaii to work on MBDTF. It really shows the mental health struggles Kanye had during this time, with the loss of his mother.

The grandiose aspect from Graduation and Late Registration has been amped up to 1000, with songs like 'Dark Fantasy', 'POWER', and 'All of the Lights' really showing off the grand aspect of the album. However, he's not afraid to show his sensitive side too, with songs such as ... read more

Kanye West - Graduation

This album, for me at least, is a bit overrated, overshadowing some of his other projects.

I love almost every track here except for Drunk and Hot Girls, and Kanye really succeeded at the 'stadium status' sound he was going for here, with tracks like 'Champion', 'Good Life', 'Flashing Lights', 'The Glory', and 'Homecoming'. Every bar, every song, shows off Kanye's charisma and musical ability. While the album may lack the ... read more

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
87

I think this album is probably a core pillar of the development of the hip-hop sound.

A Tribe Called Quest -> many other artists including Kanye West -> many other other artists

I wholeheartedly believe this album should be one of the top albums of RYM, but sometimes the flows and beats feel off and you can really tell that this album is from the 90s. I love the rapping and production on songs like Butter, Verses From The Abstract, Jazz, Skypager, and Scenario. So all in all, for me, I ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
90

I really think this deserves to be in the 'Big 3 Trifecta' of Kendrick albums. However, the only thing wrong with it is that the two albums before this one were good kid, m.A.A.d city and To Pimp A Butterfly. However, I think this album is a lot more approachable to a newer listener, with the conscious themes still intact.

A lot of these songs seem made for the popular market though, though there's nothing wrong with that.

Kanye West - Late Registration

When I first listened to The College Dropout, I was a big fan of the sound that Kanye managed to create on the record, with the sped up 'chipmunk soul' samples. But on Late Registration, Kanye partnered with composer Jon Brion to make a complete masterpiece that holds up 20 years later.

From the introspective, quiet moments of 'Heard 'Em Say' and 'Drive Slow' to the orchestral, loud, congratulatory moments of 'Touch The Sky' and 'We ... read more

Kanye West - The College Dropout

This was probably one of the first albums I listened to in full. I loved a lot of the songs on here, but what I think is the best aspect of this album is the way it grows on you. The first time I listened to this album, my favorite song was probably 'We Don't Care' or 'Two Words', but I've grown to appreciate every single track in its own way, from the lyricism of 'All Falls Down' to the commentary about family dynamics in 'Family Business' ... read more

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
100

When you hear this album and see that it was made in 1976, you begin thinking about how an album this old can be this timeless. From Stevie's singing in 'Village Ghetto Land' to the instrumentals in 'Pastime Paradise' being the foundation for the sample of an annoying 90s song, you really start to hear the influences this had on a lot of genres today.

Also, I think 'As' is quite literally one of the best songs of all time.

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Edition)
100

I love almost every single aspect of this album, from the vibey sound of tracks like "Sherane, Master Splinter's Daughter" and "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe", to the more energetic sound of "Backseat Freestyle" and "m.A.A.d city" really tells a tale of Kendrick's youth, filled with lust, betrayal, and violence.

This album has a couple bonus tracks that just makes it better. "The Recipe" and "Now or Never" should be iconic ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
100

One of the best albums of all time. Not one of the best hip-hop or rap albums, just one of the best albums of all time. I can't describe the layered narrative this tells, from lines such as '40 acres and a mule' or comparing Uncle Sam to Lucifer. It really paints a picture of systemic racism and the exploitation of African-Americans in American society.

To quote Melon, this is also just such a fun album to listen to.
