He Called Hex is an album of lo-fi maximalism that somehow keeps the listener at arm’s length, enticing you in with sing-a-long choruses, but pushing you away with vocals and hooks buried in layers and layers of reverb and dense instrumentation. Perverts is a deliberately contrarian album. For a start, it’s been defiantly classified as an EP, despite its 90-minute run time. With respect to Ethel (aka Hayden Anhedönia) and the artistic vision she presumably has for her own full-length discography, this is very much an album. For anyone seeking another set of conventional ‘songs’ like Preacher’s Daughter, though, Perverts may disappoint.
