If brutal black metal was a genre like how brutal death metal is, Panzer Division Marduk would epitomize it.
This is certainly a flawed album, with the constant blast beats getting more and more repetitive as it goes on. If I skipped to a random portion of the album, I have a feeling that even many fans of it would struggle to identify which song was playing because the general sound of the riffs from different songs here is very similar. However, what Panzer Division Marduk has going for it is that it knows exactly what it wants to be, which is one of the (if not THE) most aggressive black metal albums of all time. They change up the melodies within the songs just enough to keep them from getting too dull, which is essential for maintaining the anger that’s present here throughout the entire runtime. The rest of the song design is dedicated almost entirely toward pure rage.
If I was making a Kurt Cobain style list of my top 50 albums, I’d seriously consider including Panzer Division Marduk just because when you’re in exactly the right mood for it, there’s NOTHING better. Bonus points for “Baptism By Fire” being probably one of my top metal songs of all time in general, yes it’s that good. Something about that rising pitch sample of the bombs falling or the plane flying or whatever tf it is REALLY amps everything else up, and when the song hits you with that changeup after the second time the sample appears it makes it work even better. Far and away the best song on the album imo (although “Christraping Black Metal” and “Blooddawn” are both excellent as well and highlights in their own right).
