Sonically uninteresting, grating vocals and instrumentals, awful production, weak lyricism, if Daniel Johnston is a good example of outsider music, then I'm glad that it's outside. I feel like a lot of people give this album a higher score just because they feel sorry for Daniel, if he was some rich kid from NY they'd give this album far less praise.

An otherwise great album ruined by poor production. The shrill muted trumpet drowns out the rest of the music, distracting the listener from the overall sound of the songs. The production on the trumpet was particularly irritating on the title track "So What", making you wish that the instrument was toned down significantly for the sake of the ears.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

As somebody who doesn't consider themselves a fan of Smashing Pumpkins, or even a passing listener these days, Siamese Dream is clearly the outlier in their discography. Not only is it great, but it's also perhaps the quintessential alternative rock album, with minimalist and emotional acoustic songs like Disarm, full of sadness and melancholy, to the energetic blast of electric guitar in songs like Cherub Rock, with no song that feels out of place despite the variety on display. "The homeless man screeching about god outside my flat whilst defecating into a dust bin is driven by raw emotions and depression, should I give him a 100 on AOTY too? Perhaps I should record him and pass the tapes around to customers at my local McDonalds. Maybe in 20 years time you can find a ripped copy of this on YouTube and give him a 100 on AOTY too."
