Not much enjoying the new Afro Housey incarnation of Deep Dish. They can still build a set (as they show on disc 1), but as the up and down nature of disc 2 shows, they're on autopilot here. It's a mix of ups and downs, never unpleasant but lacking any of the grit, charm or sheer quality of their first two mixes. Nice to see the boys back together though.
Takes a while to get going on disc 1 (not a bad thing) - but really comes into its own when it juxtaposes those early sequences against the 'modern' Dubfire sound. Maybe an unpopular opinion amongst some but I think the mid-late 00s minimal techno stuff still has a veneer of 'cool' about it which gives this mix a semi-timeless quality, throughout the second disc especially.
Some strong moments let down by meandering mid 00s trancey stuff or rigid techy 00s prog. Good groove throughout let down by an inconsistent sequencing.
Structurally way better than the Moscow discs, but with fewer highs.
However, in spite of fewer bangers, the cohesion, and the specificity in those highs on each disc are far more impactful.
The mixing is fantastic across both discs, the track selection is thematically consistent and paced brilliantly.
Disc 1 the stronger of the pair here - even if Disc 2 has some great fun on. Both discs end a bit too abruptly for my liking - but maybe either let down by the time constraints of a CD, or by the fact that both discs build such a frenetic energy that the wheels are practically spinning off.
Very high highs with great transitions into and/or out of Deeper Water, Skin Deep/I Wish You Were Here, Hot/Waiting etc.
Next stop Toronto!
Bit too heavy on the chill/afro house vibes - a lot of reese bass overload on this one. Maybe I'm just weary of the Anjunadeep sound in the wider prog/melodic house sphere right now when I think there are plenty of labels in that space doing far more appealing things imo. We get a pretty cool stretch in disc 2 from Michael Cassette's Mountain Dew through to Sebastian Sellares' First Contact where we get some cool groovy stuff but other than that it's par for the course.
Not really an album, but too many tracks to be an EP really. Solid collection of groovy DJ tools - kind of an old school feel, whilst remaining contemporary and with a distinct lack of overproduction.
Quite simply a modern classic (warts and all)
I'm maybe a bit biased as it is one of the first progressive/minimal things I ever heard back at the time (bought with my birthday money back in 2009 lol). But even revisiting it and flicking through the transitions and the track listing this whole thing (disc 1 through to disc 2) is so evocative and interesting. I think this mix does such a great job of exploring an alternative side to the minimal techno scene of the time, the sort of early point of the indie dance peak, as well as the ... read more
Over half the songs here are worth a higher rating - but together and at the runtime for this whole album it has to get marked down a bit. but hey, it's a product of its time and in some ways better for it.

Huge return to form for Robb - some of these tracks bringing back the old vibe that he's been missing for years. Braggadocios, speaking from the heart, good story telling, interesting and captivating beat selection that reflects the lyrical tone of each track. More of this from him please.
Fun trip down memory lane - personally would have included Irufushi and Needs to Feel on this one rather than putting those on the second comp.
