We’re getting somewhere slowly but surely (SHIRLEY). With Detahjae, I’ve always felt annoyed at how talented he is in overall musical composition and creative potential. It’s especially frustrating with FLARE, because there is a clear and present idea trying to take shape, but the constant Tyler, the Creator mimickery followed by criticism of those calling out said mimickery hinders the album’s theme so much that it crumbles apart. It feels stupid to start this review by saying "there's nothing wrong with inspiration", but it feels like this album comes with that disclaimer needed, at least if it's to be criticized for it's faults. There's also nothing wrong with adopting a sound and creating a jumping-off point of your own to create your own sound, but this album only does the first part.
