The first instance I would argue James Brown ventured into Rock and Roll was with his album in collaboration with the Famous Flames on their third album together, Think! This project is a bit sappy as each song seems to swing from side to side in a rinsed and repeated formula that does get a bit tiring and worn through by the end of this 30 minute album. If the mixing was any good, it would be a lot higher. I know this is 1960 but other acts that are similar like Ray Charles or Chuck Berry had way better mixing and sounds to add to their passionate performances at this time.
James Brown's singing is great and his group is also on par, so if you can get past the really sketchy recordings you'll enjoy the album. I just couldn't and for that I'm sorry.
