Phil's last release of 2002 would be another record from alt-country/ slacker rock outfit D+, which Phil played drums for. I'm gonna be perfectly honest: this band isn't for me. Immediately after releasing perhaps the best folk album in the history of the genre, Elverum returns to his rock band to work on another album after a four-year absence. Was this gap the result of the desire to hone their individual skills, and only return when they have a record they need to make? Or rather, was it the result of a lack of inspiration and necessity. D+ does a great job of maintaining their minimalist and dry approach to songwriting and production while also growing from their previous two releases, distilling the D+ sound into a shorter, more concrete project. Still socially aware, still allowing for fun and jamming, and adding another layer of sincerity.
