At times, the measured approach he takes on some songs falls short of supplying the momentum needed for each part to hit in the exact way he wanted, but for the most part, Sheff creates a landscape of gentle dynamics that grow until they release their stored energy through unexpected eruptions of kinetic movement.
Littered with beautiful and touching moments. Does it need to be a grand statement? Does it need to push genre boundaries? No. Does it need to do those things to be special? Not in the slightest. The folk on the album has an endearing charm that resonates the whole way through and the quality of writing is superbly consistent.
