Train’s heart is in the right place. It feels like a labour of love, a sincere attempt at imitative flattery or misplaced act of devotion, rather than a rip-off … But it’s hard to see the point. Led Zep fans were never going to like it, and Train’s followers, having remained faithful to the band so far, surely didn’t need this over-ambitious flirtation with rock royalty.
Why did one of my Dad’s favourite bands have to ruin one of my favourite rock albums 💔💔💔💔. Train has always been super hit or miss for me, but GODDAMN this shit sucks. You would think they would do good considering this is a cover of one of the most legendary rock albums of all time, but nope, not at all. Pat’s vocals are easily some of his worst I’ve heard.
In theory it sounds like an absolute train wreck (pun not intended), and at times it is, but there are some songs where it works, and there are some additions like them not editing down Whole Lotta Love to the marketable parts or a radio edit that I can at least admire about this project. But that's also somewhat of an issue throughout this album: it's essentially note for note, beat for beat, just Led Zeppelin II, but with a different vocalist and slightly more modern instrumentals.
