Awe-inspiring, spellbinding, and imaginative, Heimdal reflects total authenticity combined with artistic brilliance. If this sublime offering isn’t a modern masterpiece, I’m not sure what is.

If more groups follow their creative example, all of metal will benefit.

Distorted Sound
You could spend all year listening exclusively to this record and still find new things lurking in the otherworldly depths. Highly recommended.

It is with the sound of Gjallarhorn still echoing that I close this chapter, certain that as long as the lads keep sailing through such unpredictable and creative waters, I will remain on board, heading towards the next new dawn.

Metal Hammer

Bergen's blackened prog voyagers seek out the unknown.

Kerrang!
Sixteen albums in, that they continue to surprise and create as much as they do is to be celebrated on its own. That it represents their best work in a decade is the triumph of a genuinely magnificent band.

After over thirty years and 16 studio albums, remarkably, ENSLAVED still find a way to remain true to their origins while defining extreme metal progression.

Angry Metal Guy

While not the best in their arsenal, Heimdal is a massive uptick compared to Utgard.

Classic Rock
Those with sensitive ears will find its more extreme moments indigestible, but it remains impressive stuff.

Started off strong, but lost a bit of power as it went on. They've got some beautiful soundscapes on here, but I do wish they could've done even more interesting stuff.

Norwegian Black Metal makes me want to go into battle and fight giant fictional monsters

I wasn't really looking forward to listening to this because I thought it was going to be bland and boring, turns out, I'm a massive idiot, and this is actually pretty good. I'm probably not going to listen to any of this again but it's grand, epic, and it sounds great, with everything melding together really well.

The mixture of more Prog styled rhythms with the darkness of Black Metal makes for a really ... read more

It's review time!!

Heimdal is Enslaved's 16th, YES 16TH!!!, studio album. Enslaved have been around for a while now. Starting in 1991, they've continue to make albums that were pretty enjoyable. But none of them got a lot of peoples attention. Until 2023 with Heimdal being released. Heimdal is a god, one of great import to Norse myth, the one who will blow on the legendary Gjallarhorn to signal the beginning of Ragnarök. Whoa! Did that actually happen? Hmm. I'll have to look in to that. ... read more

the latest (and in their top ten greatest) offering from this group of lads i love so much. They return to their black metal viking/metal roots here more than in years and yet continue to expand simultaneously somehow. There are some first wave sounding sections and punky d beats that caught me off guard, blasting and crushingly heavy sections harking back to their first 4, beautiful, scorching solos, and the same (often better than their average) soaring, ethereal vocal melodies we know and ... read more
