Madres is Sofia Kourtesis elevated, a contemporary work of electronic dance music powerful on sonic and emotional levels alike.

86
Spectrum Culture
On the surface, Sofia Kourtesis’ debut feels like an effortless and mostly joyous blend of European house music and Latin American textures, but it’s also a deeply felt, emotionally complex and meditative album that you can dance to.
85
Pitchfork
The Peruvian producer’s debut album is a shimmery collection of protest chants, club rhythms, and sunlit synths that testifies to dance music’s spiritual nourishment.

Beats Per Minute

With her “Latin heart and German motor”, Sofia, in giving so much of herself to us through Madres, permits the return of our own hearts to her.

80
AllMusic
Madres deals with serious subject matter, but ultimately it's an abundantly thankful, joyous, and celebratory record.

NME
The debut album from Peruvian-born, Berlin-based Kourtesis cements her position as a bold and crafty producer of house-infused dancefloor heaters.

Sputnikmusic
Sofia Kourtesis has crafted an essential dance album—not one where you pick a couple tunes from to play on the floor and discard the rest, but one crafted to be a moving (and frankly dazzling) experience for anyone willing to open their heart to it. I hope you dance.

Mojo
This is an intimate portrait painted in bold strokes.

Shoutout to both @SilentPassion and @sophi for the recommendation!

House music just tends to bring me a lot of joy and a sense of escapism as well. As someone who's been a massive fan of that genre of music since highschool, I just knew I needed to check this out since the genres listed are up my alley, as the phrase goes.

Wow... just wow... how have I not checked out Sofia Kourtesis' music until now? This is house music with a lot of emotion to it. It has a lot of moments that will have you ... read more

This artwork feels like the offspring of SOS and Punisher

I actually felt the complete opposite of what I expected,
as I thought it was contemporary folk or some kind of alt-pop before listening to it

The music is solid thanks to Sofia's beautiful performance and production.

Mothers Deliver

Thanks again to the lovely @SilentPassion for the recommendation. Yes, this album was already on my list to get to, but if it weren’t for him I would have completely forgotten about this release.

Peruvian House enthusiast, Sofia Kourtesis, absolutely delivers here like all mothers do. To say this took a couple of listens is kind of talking down on the process I had for this album because it was actually really hard for me to come up with a thought process for this one. ... read more

Madres* is an album that immediately feels warm and vibrant. Sofia Kourtesis blends classic house elements with personal stories, field recordings, and a quickly euphoric atmosphere. Listening to it, you notice that *Madres*, despite its club DNA, is quite emotional. Many songs have a euphoric yet melancholic quality. This is partly due to the album's strong personal story, particularly her mother's illness and the theme of caregiving. As a result, tracks like "Vajkoczy" and ... read more

House music at its best, made for driving around with the top down on a sunny day. Kourtesis has a very very bright future ahead of her.
