Loud and Quiet

A Journey… lives up to its title, and is another brilliant example of how reflective and nurturing art can be, even (perhaps especially) when it comes from a time of chaos and tumult.

Steady and calming, intimate and revelatory, and sporadically startling – it’s a record as unique as Bock’s history.

Loud and Quiet
Tracks like ‘Fires’ and ‘Bring Me Water’ are wounded, regretful and profoundly moving; later cuts like ‘Wash’ and ‘Silence’ feel more defiant in their austerity. All this is deepened by the clean, elegant production of Ross Downes and Forsyth herself, with Francine Perry’s unobtrusive mix providing the necessary space for these songs to breathe and stretch as they please.

Loud and Quiet

Aura is truly global in spirit ... The noises Noit makes aren’t quite words, but something more primal and instinctive – an incredible reminder of how much we can communicate with sheer, human, universal sound.

Loud and Quiet
Timbres of an upright piano on ‘In the Moon House’ offer a concrete sense of place, and the thunderously brooding closer ‘Atomkerne’ offers a rather thrilling climax to a record otherwise full of simmer and shimmer, meticulously crafted for maximum impact.

The Proclaimers’ singles chart-topping days doubtless belong to the previous century, but Dentures Out proves you don’t need to be a young pretender to land hit after palpable hit.

Pianist Glasper has perfected the art of creating live jazz grooves that sound like hip-hop samples, inviting big-name rappers to perform on them. Here, informed by the BLM movement, the lyrics on his third Black Radio LP are often mournful.

Producer Arthur Rizk’s band plays heavy metal in the traditional sense: catchy, operatic choruses and chugging riffs that you only need to hear once before you can air-guitar along.

All in all, if you're looking for a dose of heavy metal with talent at every position, Sumerlands have got the job done with Dreamkiller. Unflinchingly old school and packed with killer riffs, you'd have a tough time picking this out of a line-up of music from the actual time period it's succeeding at emulating.

Metal Sucks

Their straight-ahead hardcore side has just as much heart as their drive to subvert expectations ... When the game plan is repackaging ‘80s underground metal and punk with a healthy appreciation of absurdity, the game isn’t easy to get tired of.

The vast majority of the tracks stick to the band’s tried and tested formula of shiny, crunching mid-paced rock with half-spoken-half-sung lyrics from Joe Elliott and layer-upon-layer of multi-tracked backing vocals.
