A little over two months left in the year, and this is my album of the year for 2025 so far.
In Only Dust Remains, we find Backxwash clinging to the last bit of hope and light she had left. What an amazing phenomenon has happened with this album!
To begin with, I'm going to talk about the LP itself. You can tell what hometown John Michel is from, Chicago, only by listening to the sound and the artistic research. Amazing, soulful, hopeful, and jazzy album. The influence of No I.D and Ye is undeniable. The production sounds grandiloquent and orchestral, and the album is long enough to be solid and short enough to not be boring.

We can find the typical topics in a R&B album: women, sex, love, expensive branches, drugs, etc. at the start of the album, and more redemption, faith, god... as the album progresses. Smino performance captivates me for the number of different flows, he can rap too and not only sing. The production isn't nostalgic or vintage, sounds more like the 2010s stuff. It's like there was an influence of artists like Flying lotus or Thundercat for example.
I'm very fan of "Daytona" and I was so hyped with the single "Diet Coke". This album is a little downgrade compared to its predecessor. The tracklist just seems inconsistent to me, surprisingly given that Ye and Pharrell are the producers.
Even considering all these negative points, there are still some very good highlights and Pusha still got it. Great album.
To Pimp a Butterfly is a conceptual album that, simplifyingly, talks about how the cocoon (representing the environment or system) can corrupt a caterpillar (representing the poor black guy from the hood) to never become a butterfly (representing the beauty and the talented black guy).
