NCT 127 - Fact Check
65

Music I expected from NCT 127. Not a lot of interesting musical experimentation here, doesn't feel so NEO or futuristic to me. The album kind of just blends together. I think the best songs are "Je ne sais quoi" and "Misty". The title track is one of the most generic I've heard from 127. "Fact Check" sounds like a bunch of other 4th gen k-pop boy group songs, like I could imagine ATEEZ on this track. I wish the album concept was stronger.

Roger Waters - The Dark Side of the Moon Redux
25

Roger is capable of putting words in sentences and vocalizing. But who asked for this? All of these redux versions are so lousy and uninspired. Roger's pseudo-philosophizing ruins many subtle moments that are so important to DSOTM as a whole project. The instrumentals take a backseat to Roger's crooning-- there is not a single compelling instrumental moment on this album. All of the arrangements sound plastic, especially the strings. Even when focusing on the lyrics, Roger says a whole lot of ... read more

Danzig - Danzig
89

This may be some of the corniest metal on Earth. Its self-aware corniness helps this record succeed as one of my favorite metal debuts.
In some ways, it does sound like generic heavy metal/hard rock...but at the same time, I still haven't found something that is quite like this album. Its blues, horror punk, and deathrock influences make it a unique product of its time. The compositions and arrangements of these songs have that late 80s badass feeling. Not a lot of technicality compared to ... read more

Cancerslug - Whore

This is a good album. There is a lot of variety within the songs on this project and there aren't moments that bore me. The riffs can be catchy and you can lose yourself in the aggression of this project. I'm not a fan of the way this album is mixed and I dislike the drum snare.
I don't see myself returning to this project because it doesn't make me feel anything different than if I listened to some Misfits, aside from a few tracks. They aren't total Misfits rip-offs, but they sound extremely ... read more

Soda Stereo - Ruido Blanco
77

My friend, a really big Frank Iero fan, showed me this because I like other punk bands. Nice hardcore punk project, some of the songs after track 4 start sounding same-y but I think this is an enjoyable listen all around. It takes some time to get used to. The inspiration from Misfits and Black Flag (with vocals reminiscent of post-hardcore) is very obvious, present in composition, arrangement, and songwriting. The result is an interesting sound that doesn't get boring, but, it is edgy white ... read more

中森明菜 [Akina Nakamori] - New Akina: エトランゼ
71

After three fantastic albums, Akina's team kind of dropped the ball in terms of song quality with this release. I feel that nearly all the tracks on this project sound like generic idol kayō, which is a shame because Akina is at her best when she destroys the expectations of this genre. One positive is that Akina starts to experiment with her vocal technique much more on this album than any of her previous releases, forming the blueprint for her later albums with more vocal experimentation ... read more

中森明菜 [Akina Nakamori] - ファンタジー〈幻想曲〉
87

One of Akina's most consistent albums in terms of quality. Nearly every song on this project is unique and memorable. The only songs I do not find myself coming back to often are the intro track and 目をとじて小旅行, which is a very generic cutesy innocent idol kayō teen girl track. Otherwise, every song on this is solid and demonstrates flexibility in Akina's vocal technique, as well as top-class j-pop songwriting, composition, and arrangement. 瑠璃色の夜へ, ... read more

中森明菜 [Akina Nakamori] - バリエーション〈変奏曲〉
85

My favorite release from Akina. The concept of this album is a literal variation in sound and energy from track to track; an upbeat song will be followed by a more mellow track, then the energy will pick up again with an energetic song, and so forth.
Although not all of the songs stand out, the ones that do are very memorable and unique for showa j-pop. ヨコハマA・KU・MA, 少女A, and X³ララバイare some of the most high quality songs in Akina's discography, and that says a LOT ... read more

Mori Calliope - JIGOKU 6
38

I grew up listening to a lot of doujin music, a music scene that Mori clearly was influenced by, so often I can forgive Mori's music for being kinda cringy and overdramatic. But this one is a new low in my opinion. A lot of this kind of music is overblown and loud and chaotic on purpose but everything on this project specifically felt so soulless and fake to me. I thought Reol's feature would save this EP a bit but the mixing on the first song is so wonky I can barely even enjoy her presence. I ... read more

Megadeth - Cryptic Writings
71

I used to think it was extremely forgettable, but after giving it a few more listens it grew on me. Some of the tracks do slow down the pace of the album and lower the quality of the overall experience (Mastermind, Sin, Have Cool, Vortex), but I think they're still listenable. Has several high points with catchy choruses (Trust, I'll Get Even, She-Wolf). I also enjoyed The Disintegrators and FFF quite a bit-- both are bursting with energy at least for mid-late 90s Megadeth. Not essential ... read more

Megadeth - So Far, So Good... So What!
73

Unfortunately, this album was released between two of Megadeth's best records, while the band was struggling with lineup changes and even heavier drug use than usual. It's just not up to the 80s Megadeth speedy technical thrash standards. However, while regarding it as a product of its time, I think it's an enjoyable record.

Side A is a bit weak although the first two tracks are excellent openers to the SFSGSW experience. The guitar work on both tracks is some of the best on the album. I ... read more

Dieth - To Hell And Back
44

Some pretty generic death/thrash metal. There aren't very interesting moments on this record, but you can tell at least that the guys playing in this band have the experience to put songs together and great technical skill in playing their instruments. Lyrics are mostly straightforward and corny, appeals to boomers. I feel like the lyrics of "Don't Get Mad ... Get Even!" and "Heavy Is The Crown" allude to a particular feud between this band's bassist and a certain lead ... read more

Danzig - 7:77: I Luciferi
47

More interesting than 5-6 but still pretty boring. A lot of repetitive riffs again and drowned out vocals. Sometimes the vocals do stand out like on the final track, however these moments are few and far between. The mixing is also very strange, feels like the instrumental is too loud. Some cool guitar moments here and there.

Better than Blackacidevil but not even close to the quality present in the first four Danzig albums. It's still got that industrial vibe driving all the tracks though the songs don't just blend together like mush (which happened on Blackacidevil). Super atmospheric and dark in a different way compared to previous Danzig stuff, a bit grunge-ish. It isn't so bad and I can see why some fans can enjoy this album, but it's not for me. It is mostly boring and I find the riffs unimaginative and ... read more

Danzig - Danzig 5: Blackacidevil

Painfully mid. I usually like the vision Glenn Danzig has on his musical projects, and that vision does shine through on most of the songs here, but the style of music on this album really doesn't suit his vibe. A lot of the songs blend together and there aren't memorable highlights on this album that I would come back to. I like his vocals on the final track "Ashes".

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation
89

Heard about this band a few times but this is my first time listening to their album. I really like this, not one of my favorite thrash albums but it's very high quality for what it is. It's not as technical as I thought it would be, but the energy, songwriting, and concept all carry this record throughout and make it all a very enjoyable experience despite the few moments I found slightly boring. Concept and energy remind me of Megadeth's Rust In Peace a bit at times, particularly ... read more

Artillery - Fear of Tomorrow
82

Artillery's debut, thrash metal with a slight death flavor on some songs. The songs on this record give off a super dark and gritty feeling while also having the melodic qualities you'd find in a lot of thrash metal. The production is unfortunately quite poor and the technicality isn't on the level of their most famous album, By Inheritance, but this is a very promising start. I especially like Side A.

Artillery - By Inheritance
100

One of my favorite thrash albums. All the songs fit cohesively with one another while having distinct melodies, sounds, riffs-- this record never gets boring! The solos are amazing, very tight and of high technical quality. Vocals give the songs a bit of a cheesy flavor but I love it; fits great with the songwriting. Every track packs so much of a punch, must-listen record for any thrash appreciator.

Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast

Great album, obviously a classic. I'm not that into this VERY epic style of metal but it's still enjoyable.
