I revisited this album thanks to the 2024 remaster that just released. The remaster is crisp while retaining the warmth of the original sound, and many of the instruments sound clearer on this remaster. I was able to better appreciate the technicalities of Willie's orchestra. The contrast between Héctor Lavoe's higher pitched vocals and that booming standing bass provides for a savory listening experience that is best highlighted on this delightful remaster.

I don't think this album's user score should be this low. This is a great debut effort. It's definitely got some glam in it but it feels self-aware and it fuses that with some jazzy, punkish, and synthpop parts-- a standard new wave record, and it works. I think it's a bit more punkish than some other new wave records because of the vocals, but the project as a whole still has a significantly unique pop and glam to it. The songs also have an easygoing kind of vibe to them; they're danceable ... read more
This album shines a light on the very lackluster aspects of Duran Duran's synthy side. Only two songs stuck with me-- "Electric Barbarella" and "Michael You've Got a Lot to Answer For". The former is a groovy little track with a bit of a psychedelic feel, trippy and catchy, but nothing crazy good. The latter is a heartfelt ballad and I really like the vocal work on it. However, not much else of note happens throughout this album. A lot of synth noises, a lot of lousy ... read more
It took a while for this album to grow on me, but now, I can appreciate it for what it is. I started to appreciate it a lot more after getting it on vinyl. The songs are chill with a bit of infectious grooviness that make this album memorable. However, the quality dips a bit on the second half (side B), and the energy kind of starts to mesh together without being distinct to each song like on the first half (side A). Side B still has good songs and I like this project as a whole, though I do ... read more
Mildly interesting up until track 4. Then the quality dips and every song blends together into a forgettable 00s pop mush. I do like a more laid-back Duran but this project does nothing captivating that holds my attention. It became background noise. The sound of most of the pop music on this album is also too dated to be enjoyable as a standalone project. "Nite-Runner" was the only song I saw myself coming back to.
