I revisited this album thanks to the 2024 remaster that just released. The remaster is crisp while retaining the warmth of the original sound, and many of the instruments sound clearer on this remaster. I was able to better appreciate the technicalities of Willie's orchestra. The contrast between Héctor Lavoe's higher pitched vocals and that booming standing bass provides for a savory listening experience that is best highlighted on this delightful remaster.
The album itself is a ... read more
I don't think this album's user score should be this low. This is a great debut effort. It's definitely got some glam in it but it feels self-aware and it fuses that with some jazzy, punkish, and synthpop parts-- a standard new wave record, and it works. I think it's a bit more punkish than some other new wave records because of the vocals, but the project as a whole still has a significantly unique pop and glam to it. The songs also have an easygoing kind of vibe to them; they're danceable ... read more
This album shines a light on the very lackluster aspects of Duran Duran's synthy side. Only two songs stuck with me-- "Electric Barbarella" and "Michael You've Got a Lot to Answer For". The former is a groovy little track with a bit of a psychedelic feel, trippy and catchy, but nothing crazy good. The latter is a heartfelt ballad and I really like the vocal work on it. However, not much else of note happens throughout this album. A lot of synth noises, a lot of lousy ... read more
It took a while for this album to grow on me, but now, I can appreciate it for what it is. I started to appreciate it a lot more after getting it on vinyl. The songs are chill with a bit of infectious grooviness that make this album memorable. However, the quality dips a bit on the second half (side B), and the energy kind of starts to mesh together without being distinct to each song like on the first half (side A). Side B still has good songs and I like this project as a whole, though I do ... read more
Mildly interesting up until track 4. Then the quality dips and every song blends together into a forgettable 00s pop mush. I do like a more laid-back Duran but this project does nothing captivating that holds my attention. It became background noise. The sound of most of the pop music on this album is also too dated to be enjoyable as a standalone project. "Nite-Runner" was the only song I saw myself coming back to.
At times, this album works in unexpected ways. There are some really catchy and downright gorgeous vocal parts like in "Last Night in the City", but overall, the instrumentals are quite lacking. The beats often sound too generic and the experimentation tends to sound tasteless (the guitar part in "Butterfly Girl"-- that tone is so grating to the ears...). On this project, the synths often sound like royalty free club hits or something from a Macy's commercial. Nevertheless, ... read more
Lukewarm and mostly boring album. The songs aren't very memorable or striking, and I don't think they sound distinctly like Duran Duran, aside from the vocals. "Hallucinating Elvis" is one of the more interesting tracks but it has some overly repetitive parts that I felt like were unnecessary to the overall product. A lot of the tracks just start blending together, especially the last 4 tracks. The album title prepares you for what this project sounds like: pop trash.
This album was a dreadful slog to get through. Nearly every song has some catchy or groovy parts but that is INSTANTLY ruined by the sheer lack of taste this album has. I tend to like Simon's vocals but I feel that on nearly every song here, it sounds far too strained to be enjoyable, especially when he does falsettos. The songs are written with childish and uninspired lyrics, the instruments mesh together awfully, and the album drops in quality with every song: everything about this project ... read more
Not a bad album, but painfully mediocre. For Duran Duran standards, the first four tracks are acceptable grooves. "All She Wants Is" isn't a favorite of mine but it works very well within the context of the album. After "Too Late Marlene", the rest of the album is a mixed bag. There are semblances of impressive melodies on tracks like "Palomino" and "The Edge of America" but every song after Track 4 is lacking in enough guts, experimentation, or ... read more
This is a consistent record full of heartful and passionate western bangers. The songs may sound too similar at times, but the thoughtful composition, songwriting, and Marty Robbins's talented voice made up for the similarities. All songs ended up being unique experiences for me. I'm not into country music, but I am a spaghetti western fan, so I was bound to love this album.
An album with some groovy tracks and a bunch of filler. The first three songs are extremely strong and I consider them standout examples of city pop/idol kayo. I can't say the same about the majority of the other tracks as they start relying on similar beats and gimmicks without being nearly as catchy or memorable as the first three tracks. The only other song I enjoyed was "FLASHIN' NIGHT", which has an excellent bass tone.
Unfortunately, I felt as if the majority of this album has ... read more
Happy Gaucho Day. After listening to this album over the past few months, I'm certain that this is one of my favorite albums I've discovered this year.
This is a beautiful project, featuring lush and timeless jazz rock. The instrumentation and arrangement of all songs on this album are so tasteful and smooth, elevating the pure heart in these songs to a level that I seldom find when listening to ""dad rock"". Every detail of this sound is so well thought out, leaving a ... read more
Bit of a boring project but it's not nearly as bad the user score implies.
It's a step up from their debut album, with a bit more experimentation and different song structures. I don't think every song sounds the same on this project, but I also don't think it's a very memorable project nor is it something I would return to.
Similar style as the first album, but I think this is more synth-pop. And the album works with that, having some meaningful moments especially with the lyrics, but it ... read more
It's a pop album with a significant synth-pop feeling, along with some some new wave and dream pop influence. But all the songs sound the same. It all blends together into some synth-pop boringcore mush and I can barely remember anything specific about it. On the first few tracks, I start hoping it will lean into a darker new wave-ish sound or a more musically complex hopeful or futuristic sound, but each song is like eating slices of white bread. No flavor, bland texture.
I think Mikey is one ... read more
I find myself coming back to this record the most out of any other Megadeth release. A thrilling half hour of speedy thrash.
It's clear that their sound was still in its infancy, and the production of this record leaves much to be desired. But as a project, it is a solid debut effort and a unique statement to the thrash scene. This record is driven purely by deep vengeance and anger (even more so than other thrash from the time imo), channeling those emotions into technical guitar solos, ... read more
I like the sound and concept of this album, but a lot of these songs sound uninspired and a bit tasteless, like those generic modern corporate takes on "80s music". It isn't very fun Halloween music because of how many musically uninteresting moments there are on this album. Tracks like "BURY A FRIEND" and "GHOST TOWN" were surprisingly OK, but that's as good as it gets on this project-- just OK.
This is an enjoyable project. I don't care much about the mixing, it isn't unbearably bad for me and I'm desensitized to it. I'm latino and the norm growing up was hearing worse than this production/mixing. I understand why others would be thrown off by it.
The melodies on most songs are catchy and well put together. In some of the more gentle moments, it's a bit dream pop-ish or even more slightly shoegaze-y while also being like the genres in the tags. I just like the vibe of this album, ... read more
Amazing album, yeah it's "emo" but it's such a creative interpretation of thrash metal, heavy metal, post-hardcore, hardcore punk, horror punk influences. Every song on this is just incredible and I could play this whole project over and over without getting tired. The riffs are the best part, all well-played and super intuitive song composition. It would be 100 if the bass was a little louder in the mix.
EDIT: Gave it a 100 even if I still wish the mixing of the bass (and vocals ... read more
Demasiado largo, pero algunos temas me gustan. Me gusta el estilo, el trap bunny está bien, pero este álbum no necesita ser TAN largo. La mitad de estos temas son nada más mid
