88 - Grower
"talking to sleep at night"
This album was devastatingly impenetrable at first. On a strange video-loop, with each song stitched together by reverb, weird vocals and oddly placed textures.
It's therefore recommended to head to youtube or soundcloud and listen to the individual tracks. Without all the extra bits in the way, the individual tracks begin to shine, with many of these tracks being some of the best we've heard from Frank Ocean ever;
Wither,
Higgs,
Comme Des Garcons &
Slide On Me
all springing to mind. This collection of music is truly something else.
And after a few months of having the songs separated and only coming back to it occasionally in its full, I can easily say its a grower now, for me I prefer it in its full form at this point, much more than in a song by song format, when songs aren't separated you have to accept everything for what it is, when they are separate you avoid the singles you don't like.
This is truly a great album, it just requires time, this is also imo the most raw Frank has ever been with his music, and seems to be the precursor for his stream of consciousness seen across his Blonded Radio releases.
"its all new to me, having you around"
Update:
The re-mastering of this album is just wow.
