Kero Kero Bonito - Time 'n' Place
90

This album is special to me. It's one of those albums I always find myself coming back to, something I can always rely on to make me feel better when I'm down.

Kero Kero Bonito mainly focused on bright, whimsical pop prior to this, excelling at that. But from the opening notes of "Outside," completely overwhelming you with noise, you can tell that this is something different. This album represents an amazing musical evolution, a band finally coming into their own. KKB hasn't lost ... read more

Genesis Owusu - STRUGGLER

A concept album about absurdism? I should love STRUGGLER, but I never felt like it exceeded Genesis Owusu's (admittedly great) debut. It still makes for a pretty solid album, but I don't think he reinvented himself or greatly refined his sound here.

"Leaving the Light" brings the album to a strong start, introducing us to the dark and uncaring world. Then "The Roach" and "The Old Man" essentially retreads the same ground, telling us a bit more about our main ... read more

Gorillaz - Humanz

Humanz was the first real Gorillaz album to be released in 7 years, and the first Gorillaz album to come out after I became a fan. Unfortunately, it is a sizable step down from Plastic Beach. But honestly? It's still pretty good. The album came out after Trump's election, and you can tell that was on Damon Albarn's mind when he decided to theme this album as a dance party during the apocalypse. Humanz stays in the same realm sound-wise as Plastic Beach, but trades the beach vibes for darker ... read more

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream

Sometimes albums are meant to deliver on a high-concept idea. Sometimes they're just a collection of songs. This album is 6 singles and then... the rest. But god, those singles are all so good that I can excuse it. It's impossible for me to divorce these songs from the way they just ruled over 2010. Out of the six singles, FIVE were #1 hits, with the sixth peaking at #3. And I just love all of them. "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls" are probably my favorites.

I really ... read more

Lamp - 恋人へ [For Lovers]

This album just feels like summer to me. It's just so fun and bright; it seems impossible to not feel happy listening to this. The vocals are sweet and laid-back, but still quite expressive. There's a lot of really nice harmonization that would feel at home in the 60s. The jazz influence also contributes nicely with a diverse range of instrumentation and some quality solos. But even though there's everything from accordions to saxophones, the good ol' guitar and drums are a real highlight to ... read more

Slowdive - Pygmalion
95

This is my favorite Slowdive album. With the extreme minimalism and focus on silence, it's almost like anti-shoegaze. But for how slow and empty this album is, it doesn't feel boring or lifeless at all. Instead, every sound is given room to breathe, room to feel more alive than ever. Everything echoes beautifully across a vast landscape. As the few sounds present resonate and interact with each other, they become far greater than they otherwise would be individually. It's almost ... read more
