They confront largely the same demons as ever with vast newfound strength, and to call softscars ‘cleansing’ as such would be a gross understatement.
While it's not always as easy to listen to as yeule's previous recordings, softscars contains some of their strongest songwriting and most daring sound design, and feels like the most honest expression of their vision to date.
The Singaporean-born, LA-based artist’s third album sheds the high-concept for humanity.
Ultimately softscars is a record about self-acceptance and the rocky road that's forever under construction that leads there. It's a process that's taken its toll on yeule, but, as the name suggests, the wounds are starting to heal.
Put simply, Softscars is an undeniably sharp collection of songs. That it does this while mining the depths of a well-worn, often eye-roll-inducing theme is all the more impressive.
Ćmiel ... has digested the travelogs and anti-PR pamphlets; she’s self-aware and talented enough to evade the pitfalls. Behind that contorted psychodrama is a voyager who’s attuned to the ways of humankind – eminently capable of engaging on their own terms.
In weird ways, Yeule’s softscars works as a satisfying slice of artful pop for the Anthropocene that oozes catastrophe and captures a real cultural moment.
Some of yeule's distinctiveness as an artist was lost in the shift toward a more rock-oriented sound, but softscars is still a solid album in these genres.
Fuck Album of the Year, This is Album of the Life
Yeule’s cybernetic world invokes the listener to take their mind away from where they are currently and take a glimpse into the distant future. Their music conjures up mental imagery of a dystopian city in which fluorescent neon street signs populate every crevice; where towering skyscrapers sit side by side and span every visible horizon, each and every one interconnected through an elaborate system of transportation tunnels; where every ... read more
"Whether you’re healing from emotional trauma or a physical wound, time never heals a scar completely. There’s no more pain, but you can still see the mark afterward. I have a deep feeling that the things my ancestors went through got passed down; there’s some trauma that just sticks."
“Softscars" unveils a whole new side of Yeule, where they wade into softer textures and ghostly arrangements, proudly putting their ethereal vocals front and center. ... read more
A cold futuristic trip into the human soul.
I'm ashamed to admit that this is my introduction to yeule. Of course I've heard some positive things about them in the past, but for some reason I haven't heard a single song from them. I saw the high user score of this project and was pretty damn skeptical, no way it's that good right? And well, it actually deserves the praise it gets.
The Singaporean singer-songwriter and producer is certainty an ambitious visionary. This is definitely one of ... read more

Best - dazies - 100
I'm not a big shoegaze fan, but this album is perfect. It combines several genres and sounds heavenly. It's also her most personal and "human" album, since in previous ones she felt like a robot. Here she opens up more to us. A beautiful, very tender and sweet voice, and exquisite production. A very special album.
