I'm not sure what I was expecting going into this album. But I left the album just feeling bored, drained, and wondering if this was even worth the listen. A lot of this album is weak, unfun dance music that sounds more like demos and worktapes than it does fully fleshed out. Maybe this is just an album of "fun" songs to dance to at a party in the early 80s, but I didn't have much fun outside of Rock Lobster. That really is the only good thing about this record. I am speechless. What an insanely vulnerable but eclectic mix of songs. There's such an overwhelming rawness to it all that's captivating and alluring. There is no album like this, before it or since it came out. The underlying emotions of skepticism with loved ones and isolation and wanting to just break out is felt, not just heard, felt. You feel every ounce of emotion and love in this album. Even on my least favorite tracks, I still can't help but smile or find a lot to ... read more
This album is a very mixed bag for me. When this album is at its best - powerful, infectious, and sugary power pop fun - it's just a few steps from greatness. At its worst, the album can feel like a bit of a drag, with corny or slightly immature lines on Murphy's Law or a decently-passable ... read more
This album is a lot of things - mellow, impulsive and unclean. The mixing is rough and inconsistent but also careful and precise. The vocal delivery is haunting and pure. The melodies are catchy and emotive. This is raw and yet polished. And I think that's why, just on first listen, why I'm so fond of this album. There is something so wonderfully tragic about this album. It's incredibly alluring, and Mitski draws you in with such a charmingly haunted energy that you can't ... read more
A very lowkey, RnB pop EP. The softer production can really lend itself to a song like Library where the focus is truly on the lyrical content, but on a song like Snap My Fingers, it only makes the song feel empty and highlight lack of lyrical depth. Atlantis is very beautiful produced, and definitely gives off a warm, inviting, oceanic vibe. The standout track here though is Do You Miss Me At All. Everything is working here as it should be sonically, and her vocals are the most emotive and ... read more
