The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I

I would consider only a handful of albums ever produced to actually be timeless. Thriller, The Colour and the Shape, and Demon Days all come to mind. All albums where if you hear it in 1925, you get it. You listen to them in 2125, you get it. I would add Emergency & I to that list. You listen to it, and not only do you "get it", you FEEL it. The emotion. The angst. The synth, oh god the synth. That shit rattles in your brain and never leaves. Look at the genre tags that this album ... read more

I'll be completely honest, this album is just bizarre. Maybe the least newcomer friendly album ever. Like if you tell your friend who only listens to Nirvana, Blink-182, and Metallica to check out The Dismemberment Plan, and they play this album first, they're are going to be so fucking confused. And what's crazier is that the album doesn't really get better after any more listens. The lyrics tend to be... sexist and misogynistic a lot of the time? The songs themselves to be ... read more

If you had told me that THIS album would lead to Bleed American, I wouldn't have believed you. The Jawbreaker and Samiam influence hits hard here. Before I had heard this album, I assumed that Jim Adkins actually sang every song of theirs, but in this album , Clarity, and their first LP, Tom Linton actually fronts some songs. He has a damn good voice too. The album itself? It lacks a coherent identity. Every song is a different story, which is both a good and bath thing. Tonal shifts ... read more

This is the last GREAT Jimmy Eat World Album, in my totally not important opinion. The shift from Emo-Pop to straight up Pop and Alt-Rock started here. It also feels more... artificial than Clarity and Static Prevails? This was the first instance of the best songs on the album actually all being on Side A (except for one, we'll get to that later). That in itself makes this album feel more corporate, more produced. But don't let that make you think that the album still isn't ... read more

Jimmy Eat World - Clarity

Clarity is the most Unique album that Jimmy Eat World has ever made. It's also their best. Static Prevails is creative but unrefined, and anything from Bleed American onwards loses the plot. But Clarity scratches that itch of Emo/Punk/Pop, and it does it well. Each song is crafted meticulously, every chord and note is intentional. Most importantly for me, it has that yearning that some songs/album/artists aspire for, but just fall flat. You hear the yearning in the chimes, the pianos, the ... read more
