This is a sonically exciting change for Vince, an artist who’s never really struggled to find a new sound for himself, so this more punk and rock sound translates perfectly as a testament to just how versatile he is, but man did I wish the lyrics left any impression. I sat with my eyes closed trying so hard to take in the lyrics, but had to just give over to the musical experience, so while I did enjoy this, loving it felt on the horizon of my written understanding, and that didn’t ... read more
As always with any Nate sib single, it’s devastatingly short and painfully perfect, the best recipe to end up spinning on my playlists till the end of the year.
Not sure I knew that CKG had this in him, and while I don’t know if it’s the most profound experiment of his many shifts in style, it’s an instantly catchy and charming one. I’ll be curious to see how this speaks to the rest of the project, if there even is one, but I’m nonetheless pleased with the continued output of his odd tunes and raw vocals buried under a low pass filter.
God fucking damn. Listen, you can poke at Bilderbuch lyricism, it’s never been their strongest suit (did I hear an Ozempic bar?), but I come back to them every time because they always know how to evolve their sound without losing their special sauce of a catchy chorus and sticky melody, and this has riffs aplenty. I hope the album is even like one third as good.
For as much as I respect Jane Remover, I’ve never quite given leroy or the whole dariacore venture a proper listen, and its not for lacking of trying, but I think when you’re peering into the culture from the outside it can seem a tad overwhelming in tandem with the music itself. Something about Revengeseekerz though gave me a clearer idea of what exactly this would be, and so despite the chokehold of ADHD overload that status update music can be, the nostalgic corpse of your ... read more
And you thought we wouldn’t get rock music?
This is another moment of me saying I see the vision, but there’s something painfully thin about whatever direction she’s taking her work, that makes the new singles and their ultimate lack of umph, so damn frustrating. It’s selfish and stupid to demand we get the Brat era again but having been a fan of hers for the last six years, I have to express my surprise at the rather inert impression that’s been made thus far ... read more
The quality of this mans music absolutely doesn’t falter, and while there’s a lot of Peggy’s weakest work scattered through this pretty beefy tracklist, but there’s always been a strong balance of brevity with certain tracks, and endless experimentation across the bored, I think its just the least refined its been in a while. I’m reminded of the directors cut for I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU, an over extension of a much leaner and more impressive album, and that lack ... read more
I shamefully gave Vicky no respect for the work she’s been doing the last five years, having been put off almost entirely by the obscenely short runtime of her albums, and while I can now say that I get the hype, I have to admit that the very problem I feared is my biggest gripe. Anytime I find myself sliding into the groove of a track, of which there are many endlessly danceable grooves, the song is over mid ass shake, and I just end up wishing so much of this could be fleshed out. Yet ... read more
That's right Kellan, sing to me from the other side of an echoey bathroom, you know I fucking love it when you do that. The song is way too scattered, repetitive, and somewhat droning in the way Kellan can be when indulging too much in the idea, but I can't deny he still intrigues and interests me as an artist, his sonic muddiness be damned.
Any time a new After song comes out I feel like a twelve year old kid in the back of my moms van listening to Christian music. Not sure why they continue to trigger aughts poptimism for me but I always leave every single with the biggest smile on my face, and Promise is no different.
There is something here, I know Charli, I trust Alex and Finn, the vision is there. As far as this being the lead single for whatever her next era is, good luck salvaging public opinion. Not that I want Charli to ever deliver herself for the mainstream, I think I’m just dreading the post Brat era in which anything she does is going to be under the microscope, good or not.
I hate this man so much. He’s such a hater and such a fucking dumbass that he makes me wanna be a hater as well. Somehow the music just fuels all that with its stupidly flawless production. Can’t wait to listen to this album with a scowl and stank on my face.
I go through such painful cycles with Peggy’s overall persona being an exhausting experience, but every time I tune in to the album release and singles I’m consistently in awe of just how concisely perfected all of his work is. I keep expecting him to start throwing L’s, but if this single is anything to go by, Experimental Rap is going to be a certified hit.
I cannot even begin to explain how spiritually important it was that I discover Eli this afternoon. I’m a changed woman, a more complete woman, a more confident one. I pray this leads to a record.
I put this off because Eusexua was such a totemically fantastic work from Twigs, that a deluxe album turned sequel project seemed almost, too good to be true. There’s a much heavier experimental edge it takes to the production that I don’t find particularly gratifying in terms of what sonic palette Afterglow creates for itself. While the dancing and motion of Eusexua was clear, Afterglow is loose, distorted, echoey, all a strange mix of unrefined b-sides that I can almost understand ... read more
I appreciate so much of what Dorian is attempting to do with this even if I ultimately think it falls short of its conception. That’s being said there’s enough truly rich invention in some of these covers that I can stomach the lesser executed ideas, in part to its incredibly short and brisk runtime. I don’t love projects of this length but the brevity works in its favor, and I’m going to be spinning Hips Don’t Lie all damn year. That is an abominable destruction ... read more
I think it’s cute Noah released a deluxe version of this album minutes after I started listening to the standard release, only to come to the same conclusion as everyone else that it needs to be like thirty minutes lighter. This is still some prime twee radio shit, and when it’s done well, it’s hard not to enjoy. There’s a reason we cycle an artist of this particular ilk and genre through the limelight every few years, I just don’t know if Kahan’s admittedly ... read more
