The album starts very weak, I don't see myself revisiting much of the first half a whole lot. Probably a 4/10 on it's own. The production is technically good but it's just not for me. I truly have nothing else to say about the first five tracks.
Thankfully, it picks up in the second half with have you seen me dance alone. The beat is some straight up beeps and boops, but aurora's haunting vocals layered over them works very well. Then we get to somewhere else, which is the ... read more
The album starts strong, I think invariable proof and muramasa are both solid additions to their discography, but it gets a little weaker after that. Reconquista has some good riffs but I don't think pure harsh vocals suit their style very well tbh.
Then we get to the truly bizarre pantera cover. It does not fit in with the rest of the album or their style whatsoever. The production on it feels a bit weaker as well. Truly a batshit decision on an otherwise solid album.
After that detour ... read more
I'm not sure about this one on a first listen tbh. Her music has always been at home among bad tumblr prose, but it really feels like it's reached a tipping point here. Lines like "and I glow with an eternal rage" really feel like they could have been written by a 13yo. That said, it still does build an atmosphere and do well what she's always done well at a baseline. Although, this and the previous single (the new bog bodies remix) definitely feel a little ... read more
Pretty alright! I was in the mood for some indie rock so I decided to check this out. When I first put this on I started reading an article and immediately forgot I had started listening for a couple full minutes. That is how easily it faded into the background. Also, I'm really shocked that people didn't like Eastside! Imo, that was the most unique song on the album (or long EP, let's be real). Overall, there's nothing wrong with some easy listening and I did not have a bad ... read more
I'm so behind on music but I wanted check this one out. It's so funky! I love how freaky and weird they are!
Forever is such an unpleasant word.
Calling The Opposite of December iconic would be underselling it. Early Poison the Well was truly innovative to metalcore. But one cannot expect a band to stay innovative forever, as eventually their innovation will become the standard. I do think it is admirable to have something to say over 25 years after your first studio album, especially after such a long hiatus from their previous material, but that does not automatically make it interesting. Overall I ... read more
I'll probably leave a more in-depth review later but it's been a few weeks and I wanted to log this one. Overall, we're so back baby. Between an 8.5/10 & 9/10 rn but I'll go with 8.5 for now.
I don't quite get the hype for this one. It's good, but not *that* good.
Honestly, based on the few songs I've heard from them previously I expected better. There are still a few bangers, especially towards the end, but it's not quite for me. Linkin Park fans will love it.
Edit: Yeah after a few listens there's just nothing interesting or notable in here. It's executed fine, but I'm not a nu-metal fan so there's really not much there for me
I'm SO conflicted and so confused. I listened to Elderberry Wine a while ago and loved it, so going into the album I assumed it would sound like that. Dear reader, it did not. Now, to be clear, I am all for genre bending and incorporating multiple stylistic influences. Hell, the Callous Daoboys' I Don't Want to See You in Heaven is one of my favourite albums from this year. HOWEVER, I believe that country and folk are exceptions, and they should remain seperate from other genres. ... read more
This is the shit that makes you move and moves your soul. It absolutely lives up to the hype.
It's a little short, but overall pretty solid. There's nothing groundbreaking going on, and nothing is done exceptionally well, but if you like other music in this style there's almost certainly something for you here. Although, for the length, I would expect each track to be a little more polished than it is. Also the title sucks (or sux, rather).
Favourite songs: x_axis, useless, I guess I won't tell
I'm done finals so I'm back to listening to music! This wasn't really my thing, but I still generally liked it. It varies quite a lot, but still feels consistent, and absolutely justifies its length.
Favourites: mirtazapine, ego death at a bachelorette party, good ol' days
I didn't give this a review, but it's one of my favourites this year and I feel like it deserves my full thoughts. It has also grown on me quite a bit since I first listed to it (especially the songs that I thought were just alright).
The whole album is absolute peak mathcore. You never know what's coming next, but after multiple listens you discover the album's structure, and all of the seemingly incoherent elements start to come together. It feels actively rewarding to ... read more
This one is tough to give a rating. The first 11 tracks are all pretty mid, probably a 6/10 by themselves, but the last track is so fucking awesome. Idk, 6.5/10? Cause as a complete project it's still pretty samey all around, despite the last track being so sick.
Going into the album I was not expecting to like it as much as I did but holy shit this is so good. La Dispute put their best foot forward in every way, from front to back. I think this might be my second favourite album of the year now? Crazy crazy good. 9/10.
